Chapter 6
I believed that Hilton’s tenderness toward
me was enough at the moment, even if no one else did. He was my last straw. Nevertheless, now…
My heart felt like it was leaking when I saw Hilton’s disappointed face. Even him no longer wanted me.
I was pulled to the sofa by mom, who had
me sit next to Daisie.
“Hey, isn’t today also your birthday?” Daisie said this after having a sudden realization.
The others‘ expressions altered as they heard it, but nobody said anything.
I simply grinned sourly and said, “It doesn’t
matter.”
Daisie shook her head, seeming worried about me and said, “How is it possible? I am able to celebrate my own birthday as an adopted daughter. You’re the Spencer

Family’s eldest daughter; how can you not celebrate it?” She placed a candle on the half–remaining cake and pushed it in front of me while she spoke.
“Sister, make a wish.”
All the other people were looking at me lustfully, as though they may toss me out right now if I didn’t listen to her.
This absurd “birthday” had to stop, so I had to make a compromise, close my eyes and begin making wishes.
I wish…
Daisie abruptly grabbed the back of my neck and slammed my face on the cake before I could finish expressing my wish. The sticky cream and jam immediately coated my entire face and my hair was
smeared with cream. I was startled and quickly pushed Daisie away.
Daisie appeared to be bounced and struck the table next me, even though I was
obviously just giving a slight push.

She wept. “I’m sorry, I just wanted to play a joke on you. Please don’t be angry. I won’t make trouble anymore…”
Hilton took hold of my hand and tossed it to the floor before I could say anything
more.
“Are you finished yet, Madeline? Do you have to do it? Daisie was only making a joke. I once thought you were a really sincere person who worked hard and didn’t back down from difficulties but now I believe you’re so horrible that you continue torturing innocent people. What’s the point of your life?”
I had forgotten all that was happening after a few sentences and Hilton’s comments kept echoing in my head.
Mom looked at me like she wanted to devour me as she hurriedly assisted Daisie up, saying, “You heartless creature! I’m ashamed to say that I have a daughter like you. Leave my house right away and don’t come back!”

A moment later, they tossed me and my bags out the door. I sat outside and sobbed as I stared at the closed door, unable to control my feelings.
By the time I reached the airport, it was nearly daybreak. After gazing back at my hometown, where I had spent almost two decades, I decided to get on the plane.
Before that, Hilton called me. I didn’t have
to assume Daisie had told him to
reprimand me because I had acted badly once more. I put his number on the blacklist and hung up on him.
I noticed Marco Kale, my senior colleague, who had come to pick me up from a distance, when I got off the airport.
“After spending so much time sitting on the plane, aren’t you exhausted? I’ll take you to dinner first.” Marco thoughtfully took the suitcase for me.
I said with a nod, “Then I’ll trouble you.”
