Seven Heartbreaks
Chapter 1
Brandon’s kept–woman, Tiffany, was
pregnant.
I found out when her belly was as big as mine
had been.
She sat on Brandon’s lap, cradling her
stomach.
“I heard Sarah used to be, like, a total
horsewoman before she got knocked up.”
“I wanna see.”
“Babe, make her give us a show, okay?”
く
“If she does a good job, you can do whatever
you want to me tonight.
وو
Brandon looked at her for a second.
Then, he looked at me.
He didn’t say anything, but everyone knew
what he meant.
My face went white, and I clutched my
stomach.
“Brandon, please, no! I’ll miscarry!”
Everyone laughed.
Brandon rolled his eyes, annoyed.
“You’ve lost babies before.”
く
“It’s not like this is your first time, is it?”
“You can always make another one.”
“What are you waiting for?”
“Go on and ride, now!”
“If Tiffany isn’t entertained, you’re not leaving
the stables tonight!”
Guys grabbed me and dragged me to a horse.
The horse got spooked.
It took off, running like crazy, making my
pregnant belly ache.
I looked back at the stands.
Brandon and Tiffany were making out,
surrounded by their friends.
The wind whipped my hair.
I gripped the reins, a bitter smile on my face.
Brandon, this was the seventh time.
It was also the last.
- 1.
The smell of disinfectant stung my nose.
I woke up in a hospital bed.
Brandon was there, with Tiffany.
He had his arm around her.
<
They were sitting on the couch.
No one else from his family was there.
He saw I was awake.
He lazily asked, “You up?”
I was pale.
My eyes went to my flat stomach.
Brandon was quiet for a second.
Then, he clicked his tongue, annoyed.
“Guess you really did lose it.
99
“What a waste.”
I tried to smile.
It was weak.
Yeah, almost seven months.
Last night, Brandon had called me to the
stables.
All because Tiffany wanted to see me ride.
I don’t know how many laps I rode.
I just remember that even breathing hurt.
Finally, Brandon and Tiffany were done having
fun.
Brandon buttoned his shirt.
Г
He looked at me.
He spit out two words.
“Enough.”
I got off the horse.
My face was white.
I felt weak.
Pain shot through my lower body.
I was covered in blood.
I stumbled towards Brandon.
He was in the middle of the crowd.
I reached my hand out to him.
“Brandon…911…”
I clutched my stomach.
Sweat dripped down my face.
Brandon’s friends noticed me.
They gathered around.
“Seriously? You just rode around a little bit.”
“Is it really that big of a deal?”
“Dude, she’s totally faking it, Brandon. I
almost believe her.”
୮
“Oh yeah? It’s like when she pretended she
wasn’t the reason Brandon’s grandma died.”
“Nice one, Sarah! You haven’t lost your acting
skills!”
Brandon walked over with Tiffany.
He frowned, looking me up and down.
He’d probably forgotten how I looked the last
time I lost a baby.
He thought I was faking it too.
Tiffany stepped forward.
She looked at me with disgust.
く
She acted surprised when she saw the blood.
“Ew, did you pee yourself?!”
She said it loud, so everyone would look.
I was so ashamed.
I couldn’t breathe.
I reached out to Brandon for help.
“Babe, please, my stomach hurts.”
Brandon slapped my hand away.
99
“Pathetic.”
He turned and walked away with his friends.
Even the stable workers didn’t care.
They left me there, screaming for help.
I passed out.
I woke up here.
I felt tears welling up.
It happened again.
I lost another baby.
Tiffany leaned her head on Brandon’s
shoulder.
She rubbed her belly.
“It’s just not meant to be, I guess.”
L
“Some people just aren’t good with kids.”
“You’re a bad luck, Sarah.”
“When Brandon and I were getting busy, it
got pretty intense.”
“We were sweating up a storm, but our
baby’s fine.”
Brandon laughed.
He kissed her.
