When Evan walked in and saw the scene before him, the smile that had been lingering in
his eyes was instantly replaced by sheer panic.
Sofia, too, froze for a moment, her expression faltering, but she was quick to recover. Pulling her foot back, she immediately pointed at me, her voice trembling with faux
outrage:
“Evan, she tried to hurt our baby! If I hadn’t fought her off, it’d be me lying here instead of
her!”
But Evao didn’t even look at her. He shoved her aside, his face pale as he knelt to scoop
me up in his arms. His voice cracked as he spoke, his eyes rimmed with red.
“Baby, what happened? Don’t be scared. I’ll take you to the hospital right now!”
When I woke up, the first thing I saw was Evan’s exhausted face hovering over me.
His eyes were bloodshot, and the moment he saw me open my eyes, tears started streaming down his cheeks. His voice was hoarse as he choked out, “Honey, you scared me so much… I thought I’d lost you.”
Standing awkwardly in the corner was Mason, his expression unreadable.
I stared at Evan, and in that moment, I realized just how good an actor he was. The way he played the role of the devoted husband–it was flawless, down to the smallest detail.
I lowered my hand to my stomach, feeling the emptiness there.
Evan’s face twisted with pain as he said softly, “The baby… We’ll have another one, I promise.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. It wasn’t a joyous laugh, but one of bitterness and disbelief.
“My baby is gone, but yours… well, it’s perfectly fine, isn’t it? Safe and sound in her belly.”
Evan stiffened, his eyes darting to Mason.
Mason stepped forward hastily, his voice hurried and Insistent.
“Hannah, you’ve got it all wrong,” he said. “Sofia’s baby isn’t Evan’s. It’s mine. Evan’s just been helping me cover things up.
There’s a level of disbelief that goes beyond anger. It’s a cold, hollow void where you have no words left to say.
I had expected Evan to lie to me. But this? To treat me like I was a complete idiot?
hard
Evan, realizing how absurd Mason’s words sounded, quickly jumped in. “I know
w it’s ha
to believe, but it’s the truth. Mason’s wife is insanely jealous. If she ever found out about Sofia, she’d lose her mind. She’s threatened Mason’s life before.
“Mason’s my best friend. He saved my life once. I owed him this.”
Mason nodded vigorously, taking out his phone and showing me a series of photos of him and Sofia, each one carefully staged to look intimate.
“Hannah,” he pleaded, “Evan’s telling the truth. Sofia’s pregnant with my child. I begged him to help me because my health is bad, and I might not get another chance to have a baby.
“But Sofia… she got the wrong idea. After you saw us at the hospital, I scolded her. She said she was just trying to make me jealous, trying to get me to leave my wife and marry
her.
“I refused. That’s when she started trying to get back at us by dragging Evan into it. He’s only been putting up with her because of me.”
As he spoke, Mason dropped to his knees in front of me, slapping himself repeatedly across the face.
“This is all my fault,” he cried. “Please, Hannah. For the sake of the life I once saved, let it go. Sofia’s baby might be the only child I’ll ever have. Don’t take that away from me. Don’t let my family line end with me.”
Evan grabbed Mason by the collar, punching him a few times in a show of anger.

“Enough!” Evan shouted. “Mason, your mess has already ruined my life. My baby is gone because of you, and now you have the audacity to ask my wife for forgiveness?”
I watched them both, their performance so passionate and convincing it was almost
admirable.
Almost.
How could someone love a woman for over a decade, only to treat her like she was a fool with no brain, no dignity?
Did Evan think that because I loved him, I’d blindly accept anything? That I’d willingly turn
a deaf ear and a blind eye?
I knew exactly what this was.
This whole charade was Evan’s way of protecting Sofia’s baby. He knew how much I
respected Mason for saving his life all those years ago. He was counting on me to let it go,
to forgive him because of that debt.
Even if it meant losing my child.
Tears slid silently down my cheeks.
All of this–the lies, the noise, the manipulation–it was suffocating. I wanted to lock myself in a room and scream, cry, curse.
Instead, I simply said, “Leave.”
The room fell silent.
Evan and Mason both turned to look at me, their expressions cautious, waiting for my next words.
I turned to Mason and said coldly, “Get out.”
Both men exhaled softly, relieved.
They knew what that meant. It meant I wasn’t going to fight them. I wasn’t going to

demand justice.
Mason left without another word.
As soon as the door closed, Evan sat down beside me, pulling me into his arms. His voice was hoarse as he whispered, “I’m sorry, baby. I’m so sorry. If I’d known Mason’s debt would cost us our child, I would’ve let myself dio back then.”
Yes, Evan. If only you had died back then.
I reached up and touched his face, forcing a smile as I swallowed the bile rising in my throat.
“Don’t say that,” I murmured. “It’s not your fault. You’re just… too loyal.”
Evan flinched at my words, his body stiffening. He couldn’t even look me in the eye.
I pretended not to notice.
Over the next few days, Evan barely left my side. He acted like the perfect husband, as if
Sofia didn’t exist.
I started posting on social media, sharing overly affectionate photos of us, like I was marking my territory.
I knew Evan hated it. Every time he saw one of my posts, I could see the disdain in his
eyes.
He thought I’d become the kind of wife who clung to him for love, desperate and dependent.
But then Sofia made her move.
She showed up at the hospital.
Evan stormed into my room, furious. “What the hell are you doing here?”
Sofia’s eyes brimmed with tears, her voice trembling with practiced innocence. “Evan… I just came to apologize to Hannah.”

“It’s all a misunderstanding,” Evan snapped. “I’ve already explained everything to her.
Leave.”

Sofia sniffled, letting a few tears fall before turning to leave.
Not even a minute passed before Evan stood up, muttering, “I’m going to grab you some food. What do you feel like eating?”
I knew he was rushing to see her.
“Whatever,” I said.
The moment he left, I walked to the hallway window and looked down.
There they were, in the parking lot, kissing like they couldn’t bear to be apart.
I felt… nothing.
Maybe I’d finally let go..
I pulled out my phone and recorded the scene.
As I turned to head back to my room. I came fann to face contal.
