The moment I arrived at the office, Jane grabbed my hand and said loudly, “Chloe, I’ve asked my friend the question!”
There were other colleagues around her, so I quickly gestured for her to lower her voice.
She covered her mouth and giggled. Leaning close to me, she whispered, “My friend said that she can open most password–locked doors. She can even open doors that locksmiths can’t open!”
That was great news!
I was delighted. Once the other colleagues walked away, I sat Jane down and whispered, “Jane, please do me a favor.”
She frowned at me. “You were the one who told me there’s no need for courtesy between best friends. Fire away!”
I glanced at the office door, ensuring that there was no one around. Then, I wrapped an arm around her shoulders and whispered in her ear.
She nodded as she listened. “Leave it to me!”
After ten minutes of discussion, she hurriedly left.
Meanwhile, I sat in the office, waiting. During this time, I noticed Zane sneaking over suspiciously a few times. Clearly, he was observing me to see if I’d secretly gone home like last time.
At 11:00 am, I received a text from Jane. “Sorry, Chloe. My friend couldn’t open the password–locked door in your basement.”
I sucked in a gasp, stunned. I’d placed high hopes on Jane and her friend, thinking that they would be able to break down the door and investigate the secret in the basement for me.
The devil worked hard, but Zane worked harder! We had underestimated him.
Jane sent another message. “We’ve tried every method we know, but it still won’t open! I can’t help but feel like there’s someone in the basement. Just as we’re about to open the door, someone on the inside locks it again.”
I had also suspected that there was someone in the basement. I replied, “Thank you. You should leave quickly. I’ll think of something else.”
What should I do now?
Should I call the police? If I didn’t, I would never find out the secret in the basement.
What if I did, and there was nothing in the basement? My relationship with Zane would definitely sour rapidly!
Just what should I do?
It was time to get off work. I drove myself and Zane back to the villa. Just as I parked the car, he lunged toward me and slapped me in the face over and over again.

Without saying a word, he just started hitting me out of the blue!
“What are you doing?” I screamed as I tried to cover my face and head.

He didn’t answer, but his hands never stopped striking me. In fact, he was exerting even more force.
My head and face stung with pain. I felt like if he kept it up, he would beat me to death.
I fumbled for the seat belt buckle and undid my seat belt. I opened the car door to get down, but he held my arm in a death grip, stopping me. All the while, his other hand kept attacking me. Using his palm then his fist, he hit me all over my face and body!
I couldn’t stand the pain any longer and began screaming for help.
Then, he began to assault my mouth so that I couldn’t make any sound.
Suddenly, I remembered that I had a small pair of scissors in the little pocket of the car door. I felt around for the soissors. Seizing a hold on them, I began to thrust the blade at him.
“Hey!” he shouted. Only then did he stop attacking me and back down.
I finally got the chance to catch my breath. Panting heavily, I glared at him angrily.
His eyes were also bloodshot. He stared at me with rage, using his right hand to grip his left wrist. I glanced down at his left wrist to find a gash there, which was bleeding profusely.
I could feel that my face and head were swollen. “Why did you beat me?” I yelled furiously.
“You deserved it!” he gritted out.
“For what?”
“You know what!”
At that moment, it came into my head. He must have found out that I had someone try to break into the basement!
“You’re so devious!” he spat viciously, jabbing his finger at my nose. “I’ve warned you not to go down to the basement and to leave it alone, didn’t you hear me?”
I repeated the same words. “This is my home, and this house belongs to my family!”
“I told you, give me half a year, and I’ll make sure you’re satisfied, you hear me?”
“As if! From the way you’re acting now, you might end up killing me after half a year!”
