Zane and I hosted Jane and Monica graciously that evening, and the air in the house felt much lighter. At 10:00 pm, we showed them to the door with smiles on our faces.
Finally, we lay down to rest. Our nighttime routine was still the same as before; calm and quiet with nothing happening.
At that moment, I couldn’t fall asleep. I lay against the head of the bed, watching videos on my phone. I was subscribed to the local news channel. In the video, the newscaster once again mentioned the accident that happened in front of the office.
Three people had died on the spot, while three others had been gravely injured. Now, two of them were in critical condition. However, the driver had fled the scene and was still at large.
The fugitive’s name was Bree Polene, and she drove a BMW. She had been the queen bee in high school and always bullied her peers. I’d known her back then but rarely interacted with her.
Suddenly, I remembered that Zane used to date her.
For some reason, I’d always thought that there was something off about Bree. However, I couldn’t put a name to it right now.
Zane had gone out of the shower and walked toward me. I pointed at my phone screen and asked, “Zane, do you know Bree Polene?”
Upon hearing that name, he shuddered violently. He widened his eyes at the video. However, after taking * a glance, he waved his hand and said impatiently, “Why are you talking about her? Go to sleep!”
“Bree-”
“Did you hear me?” he roared, his demeanor changing abruptly.
Shaking my head, I set my phone on the bedside table and lay down to rest. Zane switched off the lights and also lay down beside me.
After that, neither of us uttered a single word.
Logically speaking, after that intense conflict we had in front of the house, where he’d hit me and I’d stabbed him with a small pair of scissors, we should be talking about it. This was so that we could avoid history repeating itself in the future, and at the same time, improve our relationship as a married couple.
After all, it was impossible to grow closer without having a fight or two.
Yet, we didn’t talk about it. As usual, we lay in the same bed, disconnected.
When 1:00 am rolled around, I awoke once again. Turning to the side, I noticed that Zane was gone. He must have gone to the basement to “exercise” again.
Then, I glanced at my wrist. There was a golden handcuff around it.
However, this time, I was better prepared. I took out the universal key that I had obtained in advance. After listening closely to hear if there was any noise outside, I gently unlocked the handcuff.
My heart beat wildly as I got out of bed. For self–defense, I grabbed the scissors that I had also stowed in

advance.
Barefooted, I snuck out of the bedroom only to find that it was completely dark outside, I listened closely for noise again, then slinked to the corner of the hall, peering down at the pitch–black basement.
Jane had already helped me check the stairway that led to the basement and confirmed that there were no surveillance cameras. That was why I could bravely walk down there.
With every step, I paused in preparation to run and hide. The entire staircase only had around 20 steps, yet it took me five whole minutes to walk all the way down.
Stopping in front of the basement, I pressed my ear to the door and listened for sounds,
“Ah! Ah!” A woman’s moans came from Inside, and it sounded sexual!
Shocked, I felt chills run down my spine. As I thought, there was someone there!
Who was she?
Zane was actually hiding a woman in the house. Who the hell was she?
There was another problem. When Jane, Monica, and I went down there, how come it had been completely empty?
I fully trusted my gut that Zane must have moved the woman somewhere else!
I listened for a while longer, confirming that someone was indeed inside. Then, I quickly went back to the
room.
Now that I was sure there was a woman in there, I knew what to do tomorrow!
I got back into bed and put the handcuff back on my wrist. Laying down in the same position, I shut my eyes and slept.
