Chapter 9
Zane lay in a hospital room, hooked up to an IV drip. When I entered, his face was still twisted into a pained grimace.
“Is it still coming?” I asked.
“Yes, but it’s not as bad anymore. I’m wearing a diaper Zane pointed to a stack of diapers at the side. “I feel like it’s gotten all over my crotch. Clean me up and help me change into a fresh diaper.”
“Clean you up?” I chuckled coldly,
He was taken aback. “You’re my wife. If you won’t clean me up, who will?”
Seeing how indignant he looked, I couldn’t help but laugh. It was at this moment that I, his wife, was
useful to him.
“You shouldn’t ask me to clean you up,” I said. “You should be asking another woman.”
“Who?” he asked, appalled.
I replied with the other woman’s name. “Bree Polene.”
He was so surprised that he shot up in bed. “Who? Who’s Bree Polene? What are you talking about?” he asked, still pretending to be confused even though he knew the truth.
I let him continue acting. “Have you forgotten about Bree?”
He shook his head profusely. “I don’t know her. I’ve never heard of her.”
“Oh, really? Then who were you hiding in the basement of my home?” I reminded him.
His eyes grew wide. Feigning anger, he shouted, “What are you talking about? Chloe Jones, I’m gravely ill and in the hospital. It’s one thing to not even comfort me, but you’re even making up trouble! Are you even
human?”
After his tantrum, the patients in the two beds next to him, as well as their visiting relatives, gaped at him in surprise.
I smiled, watching him continue his farce.
“If you want to take care of me, then do it. If you don’t, then leave!” He whipped his head to the side in
anger.
“Obviously, I’m leaving. However, before I go, I want to tell you that you have visitors.” I pointed to the door.
Zane turned toward the door abruptly. Two police officers in uniform appeared, regarding him coldly as they walked toward his hospital bed.
The other patients and their relatives were even more flabbergasted when they saw that the police had
come.
“Are you Zane Kors?” one of the officers asked.
Zane nodded dumbly. “Yes. What’s the matter?”
