“Driver! Hurry! Start the car. I–I will pay you!” In a state of chaos, Mabel pulled out several red bills from her coat pocket. She hastily handed them to the taxi driver, pleadingly urged, “Please, start the car! Hurry!”
“What are you playing at–The driver didn’t finish his sentence when he saw another large stack of money appear before him.
Mabel’s hand trembled as she pulled out all the money she had from her pocket. “Please, take this and drive now!” As she spoke, she turned her head fearfully to look behind her. He’s getting closer
“Hurry up! Hurry up! Is it because I’m not giving enough money? I have money! I still have more! It’s on my bank card! Please, sir, just drive. Once we get to a safe place, I’ll withdraw it for you” Her words were frantic and incoherent, her eyes wide with panic. Her face was as white as a ghost as if she had encountered one,
The taxi driver looked at Mabel as though he were staring at a lunatic. However, when his gaze fell upon the wad of bills in Mabel’s hand, he pursed his lips. Guess I’ll do it for the money.
The driver swiftly grabbed the banknote from Mabel’s hand. “Sit tight.”
He started the engine and started driving forward. Upon seeing that, Mabel was about to sigh in relief when something unexpected happened.
Mabel heard the harsh screech of tires against the pavement. Immediately, the taxi driver cursed under his breath. “D“mn, nothing’s going right today. Hey, those people are here for you, aren’t they? Did you steal something from them to have them chasing you like this?”
The driver glanced over at the passenger seat in exasperation before abruptly silencing himself and swallowing the words he wished to say back. It was because he saw Mabel trembling, her teeth chattering in fear. She had curled herself into a ball, staring ahead with a look of utter terror and despair.
It was as though she was looking at something more terrifying than death.
Immediately after, Mabel sprang into action. She frantically closed all the car windows, then quickly curled herself up as if she could evade those people by doing so.
“Are you an idiot-“The driver was on the verge of making a sarcastic remark when a knock on the passenger door interrupted him.
“Ms. Jennings, could you please step out of the car?” said someone outside. Mabel paled and buried her head deeper. pretending as though she could neither hear nor see anything.
A second later, two more knocks echoed from the taxi driver’s window. Shortly after, Mabel heard an indifferent voice from outside the car saying, “Sir, please open the passenger side door of the taxi”
The tone was very formal, devoid of emotion. They used the word “please,” yet their attitude was incredibly firm. All of Xavier’s subordinates had learned well from Xavier himself.
Mabel shouted at the driver agitatedly. “Don’t open the car door! I’ll pay you
Bang
Following a loud noise, the glass of the taxi window on the driver’s side shattered into fragments.
That sudden turn of events not only startled Mabel but also left the driver petrified.
The driver shouted, “I’m calling the police! Is there no law any-
A stack of crisp, new red bills landed on the driver’s lap. At a glance, it seemed to be around ten thousand. Outside the car window, a bodyguard in black attire with a buzz cut asked, “Can you open the door now?”
“Sure, sure, of course! No problem at all!” The driver, seeing the money, eagerly responded. At the same time, he opened the passenger door of the taxi. “Hey, time to get out.”

The driver was convinced that the crazy woman beside him must have offended some influential figure. He saw no need to be polite to Mabel anymore. He rudely ordered her to get out of the car, and his tone was even harsher. Mabel refused to leave, gripping the seat tightly. Seeing that, the driver even resorted to physical force, roughly pulling at Mabel’s arm. “Get out of the car! I’m not driving you anymore! Hurry up!”
Mabel clung to the back of the chair, shaking her head vehemently. No! No! Don’t make me leave the cart
“Get out.” A cold, indifferent voice echoed from behind Mabel. The familiar sound made her back stiffen in an instant.
The night held a hint of sweltering heat, which was abruptly dispelled by that sudden voice.
No, don’t look back. Everything will be fine as long as I don’t look back. It’s just an illusion, a figment of my imagination. Mabel closed her
eyes.
“Don’t make me repeat myself. Mabel, you know the consequences of upsetting me will be dire.” The voice from behind. became even more inhuman.
The color drained from Mabel’s face in an instant. I know! Of course I know!
Hence, despite her fear, she slowly turned around.
The man was standing a few meters away from the car under the streetlight. He held a lit cigarette between his fingers and took a drag. The white smoke swirled around him, partially veiling his chiseled, perfect features.
Under the dim light, Mabel couldn’t quite make out Xavier’s expression. However, he stood under a street lamp, extending his hand and gesturing for her to come over. “Come here.”
