His voice was deep and captivating, undeniably charming. Any woman who heard it would be entranced
However, to Mabel, his voice sounded as if it were from a harbinger of doomt
She didn’t want to go back, not in the slightest, but she didn’t dare resist. As if her feet had a mind of their own, she stepped out of the car. Mabel, moving slowly, walked toward the man standing under the streetlight.
The man tightened his handsome brows, his gaze briefly sweeping over Mabel’s legs before Landing back on her face. He chuckled lightly, his tone laced with subtle mockery. “Is this amusing? The firm and decisive, yet calm and self–controlled Ms. Jennings now only capable of davodling anil deliberately stalling for time? Hom?”
Mabel’s breath hitched, her fingers digging harshly into her thigh. She knew Xavier was convinced that her slow actions were due to her deliberate attempts to stall for time.
She did hope it was as he had said, that she was merely stalling, but the truth couldn’t be further than that.
Gritting her teeth. Mabel quickened her pace. A familiar pang of pain surged through her, causing her to pinch herself harshly
The man under the streetlight opposite her noticed her quickening pace and grinned. That’s right. A plaything should act like a plaything
Xavier reached out, pulling Mabel close. Xavier exhaled his last puff of smoke, his fingers pinching the cigarette butt. Without even a glance, he extended his hand behind him, where a subordinate promptly took the spent cigarette from his grasp.
The very next moment, Xavier seized Mabel’s chin, causing her to feel a sharp pain in her jaw.
Xavier moved it around a few times as he savored Mabel’s embarrassment.
Then, he said, “Goodness, when did the once proud and high–spirited Ms. Jennings become so timid and weak that she let a mere taxi driver insult her to the point of complete humiliation, continuously apologizing without a shred of dignity left?”
Mabel shivered, and she blurted, “Did you send someone to follow me?”
“Well, it seems you’re not entirely dumb”
Mabel grimaced. Suddenly, she let out a silent, bitter laugh. I knew he wouldn’t let me go that easily.
Suddenly, she turned toward the taxi driver and spoke in a languid tone. “You asked me earlier what I stole that caused me to be pursued.” She slowly met the taxi driver’s gaze
“Well. I stole a woman’s life. I killed the woman he loved the most.” Mabel slowly pointed toward Xavier, then slowly toward herself “My best friend”
Her words came out at a painstakingly slow pace, so slow that it gave everyone present the uncanny feeling that they were not facing a young woman in her twenties but rather an elderly person.
Xavier was utterly repulsed by that feeling. A surge of anger welled up within him as he grabbed Mabel’s hand and hurriedly shoved her into his car
Suddenly, Mabel cried out, “Wait, my money!” Finding a moment, she ‘rushed‘ toward the taxi driver. To onlookers, her ‘rush‘ was just a bit faster than the normal walking pace.
As she was about to approach the taxi, a long arm wrapped around her waist, “My money! Without money, how could I possibly
“How can you possibly run away without any money? Xavier coldly interrupted and questioned Mabel. “Is that what you wanted to say?”
Mabel was taken aback. Not of course not! I need money! A lot of money. I have debts to pay and a promise to fulfill. It’s my money! My dream of Serenity Lake! My promise!
“Let go of me! My money!” Mabel struggled, shouting at the taxi driver with all her might. “Give me back my money!”
“Hey, you gave me the money. You can’t take it back.” The taxi driver was certainly not willing to let his easy earnings slip

“Give me back my money!” Mabel’s eyes reddened with desperation. “Please, I beg you! I beg you to return my money! Without money, how am I supposed to go on?” Mabel pleaded, his voice filled with both sorrow and humility.
Xavier was enraged!
He couldn’t believe the person before his eyes was still Mabel!
He recalled that after she courageously confessed her love to him, she was met with his cold rejection. Yet, she held her delicate chin high and said. “Whitney is indeed a great woman, but she’s not right for you. The woman who deserves you should be more confident and powerful. like me.”
Mabel even seriously said. “Xavier, you’re too strong, too exceptional. You have so many enemies Xavier, you shouldn’t have any weaknesses. Above all, your woman shouldn’t be your weakness. Whitney is too weak. She won’t do, but I can!”
Every time, he would insult her, saying, “You’re despicable! Even coveting a friend’s lover!” However, every time, she would tilt her head back in defiance and retort, “Xavier, you’re still single right now. When did Whitney become your girlfriend? 1 will steer clear of you then!”
In the past. Mabel was a proud woman!
Yet, at that moment, she was pleading, “Please, give me back my money.”
