Chapter 17 Nothing Else To Offer

Navier, it’s not that I love to kneel to much. It’s just that I have nothing else to offer! You took away my past and erased Mabel from the Jennings family. You wiped out the cristence and history of a living person. I’m worse off than a vagabond on the street. At least they have a home, a past. What about me Dignity? Mabel hung her head low, disregarding the bitterness in her mouth.
She was trembling. As she lifted her eyes, she met Xavier’s black pupils. Just like that, under Xavier’s gaze, Mabel slowly kneeled down. Navier, only Mabel from the Jennings family has dignity and pride. How could I a reformed laborer, have any?
Pressing his lips tightly together, Xavier moved forward without uttering a word. Despite the surrounding murmurs and gestures, he remained unbothered, advancing further. No one had any idea what he intended to do
A pair of long legs and polished, glossy shoes that reflected their owner’s meticulous taste appeared in Mabel’s line of sight. Her heart fluttered slightly. Then, she saw those long legs slowly bent into a crouch, Almost instinctively, Mabel lifted her head, coming face–to–face with an extraordinarily handsome countenance.
“Are you really Mabel” There was a deep and puzzled look in Xavier’s ink–black eyes as he questioned her sternly. Mabel felt as if she had been struck by a massive hammer, her body swaying slightly. For a long time, she didn’t utter a single word in response Navier slowly stood up, his gaze falling onto the woman beneath him who seemed as insignificant as an ant. With a dismissive tone, he commanded, “Follow me.”
Mabel stood uneasily in front of Xavier after she followed him into a room inside the building. After a while, there was a knock on the door. With a deep and composed voice, Xavier casually commanded, “Come in,”
Mabel watched nervously as the person who had interviewed her three months ago walked in. It was Mikayla.
“Ms. Mikayla” Mabel said, her heart filled with unease. She cast a cautious glance at Xavier, who was seated on the single- seater couch, then at Mikayla, who had suddenly appeared. Her heart pounded with uncertainty as she was unsure of what scheme that inscrutable man was plotting.
“Mr. Scott,” Mikayla, clad in a perfectly tailored white suit that did nothing to diminish her allure, stood respectfully in front of Xavier. “Is there anything you need?”
Mabel found Mikayla’s attitude toward Xavier rather odd as if Xavier was Mikayla’s wealthy benefactor. What Mabel didn’t know was that Xavier was indeed Mikayla’s boss. However, having spent three years in prison, Mabel was oblivious to the worlds drastic changes during her absence.
“Do you know her?” Xavier subtly gestured toward Mabel. Mikayla’s expression turned a bit sour. She shot a covert glance at Mabel. She did have a recollection of Mabel, a woman who had left a profound impression on her.
Mikayla rugged at the corner of her mouth, revealing an extremely unnatural smile. “Mr. Scott, did Mabel offend you in any way Please, don’t be upset. I’ll make sure to lecture her properly.”
Mabel detected the protective undertone in Mikayla’s words. She had initially thought that, at that point, the notoriously strict Mikayla would fire her outright. However, to her surprise, Mikayla defended her in front of Xavier. That unexpected turn of events left Mabel not only astonished but also filled with gratitude toward Mikayla.
Mikayla shot Mabel another glare. She wouldn’t have taken the risk to protect Mabel if it weren’t for the fact that Mabel had been competent and low–profile at work, not to mention sensible and never causing her any trouble. She was clueless about how Matarl who always kept such a low profile that she barely made her presence felt, had managed to offend the person she should least offend
The subtle interactions between the two didn’t escape Xavier’s keen gaze.
Xavier’s dark gaze landed on Mikayla. “Who interviewed her?”
Mikayla’s face turned ashen in an instant. Heads of sweat trickled down her forehead
“Him” Xavier hummed lightly, his questioning gaze falling upon Mikayla’s pale face.
“J–It was me, Mr. Scott 1 personally interviewed her.” In reality, Mikayla did not need to conduct interviews herself. Ioan? believe it! I hadn’t personally conducted an interview in two or three years that on earth possessed me to do so that nightt
Mikayla was filled with regret. Seeing Mr. Scott’s demeanor, she feared that Mabel had truly angered him. Having been with Mr. Scott for all those years, Mikayla knew when Xavier was genuinely upset.
“You interviewed her for the position of janitor?” Xavier raised his slender eyebrows slightly. Sweat trickled down from

With caution. Mikayla stated, “During the interview, Ms. Jennings’s overall qualifications did not meet the requirements for any of the positions at Club Royale, not even as a server,” Mikayla said somewhat awkwardly, “However, Ms. Jennings herself expressed a desire to work as a janitor here.”
Upon saying that, Mikayla suddenly lifted her head, addressing Xavier. “Mr. Scott, Mabel has been diligent and thorough in her duties as a janitor.”
Having reached the position she possessed at that moment, Mikayla no longer needed to concern herself with every person and matter beneath her. However, when it came to Mabel, Mikayla couldn’t quite put her finger on what she felt.
She believed Mabel and herself should have belonged to two different worlds. Yet, she found particular similarities between her and Mabel. Upon thinking further, however, she couldn’t figure out what it was.
