Chapter 8 My Patience Is Limited

Mabel’s face turned pale. Mr. Scott.”

She struggled to suppress her fear, gripping her thigh tightly to maintain a calmn facade

However, every move she made had already been seen through by the man sitting on the couch across from her

Xavier squinted his eyes, sizing Mabel up. If he hadn’t seen her at Club Royale today, he might have almost forgotten her

Her transformation was significant. If it weren’t for that server calling her name, he wouldn’t have recognized her at all

The dim lighting in the private room made it hard to see clearly, but even so. Xavier had to admit that Mabel’s change was beyond his expectations

When did you get out?Xavier asked casually

Mabel’s heart raced, and her face drained of color as she suddenly looked up, her eyes pleading with the man across from her. Please, don’t say it. Don’t mention my prison time in front of so many people. Her eyes clearly conveyed this message

Xavier raised an eyebrow. Unexpectedly, he lifted his finger and pointed at the bottle of wine in Miranda’s hand, a cold smile curling on his lips as he said to Mabel I know what you want to say. Fine. If you can drink that entire bottle. I’ll agree to your request

Mabel’s pale gaze fixed on the vodka bottle Miranda held

Vodka by Boss was one of the most wellknown vodkas in the world, with an alcohol content of around forty percent. Staring at the bottle, Mabel opened her mouth, wanting to say something

The man on the couch, like a hunter teasing his prey, fixed his dark, playful eyes on Mabel. My patience is limited.”

That familiar voice made Mabel’s complexion pale further

II can’t drink

As soon as the lie slipped from her lips, Mabel felt a prickling sensation on her scalp, as if that gaze were burning into her. Her palm quietly formed a fist in the unseen corner. She felt like a death row inmate awaiting sentencing, agonizing over the final verdict

“Mr. Scott, please spare me. For the sake of survival, Mabel was willing to abandon her pride and crawl on the ground to plead. Please, just let me go this once. As long as I don’t have to drink, I’ll do anything you want. She wanted to live. Only by surviving could she repay her debts

Yes, she owed a substantial amount, but the creditor was definitely not Whitney

A fleeting surprise crossed Xavier’s face, barely visible in the dim light, but then he resumed his emotionless demeanor and said, Just for a bottle of liquor, you’re willing to kneel? Mabel, what happened to your former arrogance and the dignity you fiercely defended?”

Digmaty

Mabel buried her face deeper, a bitter smile forming

What is dignity? Can dignity be eaten? Can it help me survive? I knelt down not to avoid drinking a bottle of liquor, but to survive

She shut her eyes in pain. The moment she closed them, images of humiliation flooded her mind. Only one person was different, and that girl ultimately died in that dark, damp prison because of her

A young life of twenty, flourishing and vibrant, extinguished in that dark, humid place

It was all Mabel’s fault

This

was a sin, a debt that could never be repaid

She didn’t owe Whitney anything. She owed that girl who bravely stood up for her in prison but ended up dying in vain

Mabel trembled uncontrollably, seemingly reliving the moment she saw that girl, covered in blood. Iving in her arms, calling

Mabel, after leaving prison, what do you want to do? I want to go to Serenity Lake. Serenity Lake is pretty, and the water is crystal clear. The water birds there are lovely, and the fish and shrimp are delicious. The sky is bluer, the water is clearer, and the sunshine is warmer than in this city. I want to work hard, earn a lot of money, and go there to open a guesthouse. I’m not looking to make a fortune: I just want to face Serenity Lake every day, watching the tides come and go. I don’t need to earn a lot, just enough to live comfortably, while occasionally watching the backpackers come and go. Mabel, I feel like I’m about to die. What should I do? I haven’t even had a chance to see the beauty of Serenity Lake.”

That was a voice Mabel could never forgetsad and heavenly. She held the girl tightly, using her own body heat to warm the girl’s increasingly cold body

In her last moments, the girl’s clear eyes, filled with longing, gazed toward the small piece of sky visible through the tiny iron bars of the prison window. She said, Mabel, actually, I’ve never been to Serenity Lake. I’ve only seen it on TV, in newspapers, and in magazines. I know that even if I get out of prison. I won’t have the money to open a guesthouse. I just wanted to dream of something impossible before I die.”
