Chapter 4
I shrugged nonchalantly.
“An abortion, of course.”
Williams started to tear up when he heard me speak so lightly about it.
He struggled to control his emotions and tried really hard to remain calm.
Even so, there was a hint of sadness in his voice when he spoke.
“Christelle, why did you abort our child?”
At that moment, I looked at him as if he were a fool.
“Why? Williams, you’re a firefighter. Don’t you know how toxic smoke is?
“I told you that I was pregnant, but you gave the mask to Lela. Now, you’re asking me why I had an abortion? Are you pretending to be clueless?”
I did not want to look at him any longer. I was afraid that I might feel disgusted if I did.
Williams trembled and tried to hug me. However, Leia suddenly held her forehead and started falling to
the side.
Coincidentally, she fell right onto Williams.
He withdrew his hands and quickly supported her instead.
Leia looked at me weakly and spoke in an apologetic tone. “Christelle, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt your family reunion. I just felt a little dizzy.
“Williams is aware that I’ve always been unwell.”
I watched her put on an act and just smiled as I gave her an understanding nod.
Then, I held Lucas’s hand and left without looking back Williams and James anxiously called out to me, but I ignored tiem.
Ever since I bumped into them in the hallway, they started showing concern for me.
They began to visit my ward frequently and even treat Lucas more kindly.
I did not want to create any conflict before the divorce and so I did not stop them. Rather, I kept my distance and appeared aloof.
In contrast, Lucas would always pull a long face whenever they visited.
He would only return to his adorable self once they were gone.
“Mom, can I not be friends with James?” he asked.
I looked at him with amusement.
“Sure, but why do you dislike him so much?”
I thought that a little boy like him would enjoy playing with children his age.

“Because he hurt you!”
He clenched his fists with an indignant expression.
“I’d never put my mother in any danger,
“And…”
He looked up and stared at me with concerned eyes.
“I can feel that you’re unhappy every time you see him.
“He doesn’t care about your feelings and only thinks of his own happiness.”
I was taken aback. Williams had once told me that a selfish woman like me would never be loved.
Yet, Lucas already loved me.
Most importantly, I was beginning to love myself.
I thought that James and Lucas could get along until I was discharged. Unfortunately, they ended up getting into a fight.
It happened the day when Williams was not around. James came to my ward by himself and refused to leave.
The boys started fighting after I entered the washroom
When I came out, James had Lucas pinned beneath him.
I quickly pushed James away and shielded Lucas in my arms.
James started crying.
“Mom, I didn’t bully him! He said-”
I interrupted him before he could finish speaking. “Whatever it is Lucas said to upset you, I apologize on his behalf.”
At this moment, Williams opened the door with a smile
However, he instantly froze.
The anger in his eyes was palpable, and his tone was oddly accusatory.
“Christelle, why are you apologizing to your own son on someone else’s behalf?”
+hugged Lucas and gently wiped his tears away.
Then, I lifted my gaze and calmly said, “Williams, although Lucas isn’t my biological child, I’ve decided to adopt him.
“So, he is my child.”
Perhaps the determination in me triggered him, but Willams started to tremble.
After a long silence, he managed to force a smile.

“Fine. Since you’ve decided to adopt him, he’s our child from now on. Once you’re discharged, we’ll clear out the storage room for him.
“Christelle, we’re a family. We should always be together.”
Immediately after, Lucas looked up and spoke urgently
It was as if he feared that it would be too late if he waited even a second longer.
“I don’t need a father. I only want my mom.”
I laughed and ruffled his hair affectionately.
“Alright, just a mom and no father!”
My smile vanished when I looked up.
“Williams, once I’m discharged, let’s proceed with the divorce.”
