Chad was about to say something, but a loud
ringtone cut him off.
It wasn’t Chad’s usual ringtone. It was a
special one.
Chad looked at the caller ID and immediately
answered.
His voice was gentle.
“Tiffany, what’s up?”
“What?! Okay, okay, don’t cry. I’ll be right.
there.”
Chad hung up.
“Tiffany got drunk and she has a fever. I gotta
go back and take care of her. Tell our parents
for me.”
He paused, then coldly said.
“Ashley, I hope you take some time to think
about your mistakes. When you come to A
City, I’m taking you to apologize to Tiffany.”
I laughed and couldn’t help but ask.
“Tiffany can call you, but she can’t call 911?
“Tiffany can call you, but she can’t call 911?
She has a fever, not paralysis. Chad, it takes
three hours to get to A City. Are you faster
than an ambulance?
Chad frowned, a look of disgust in his eyes.
“When did you get so mean?”
“Tiffany’s a genius. She doesn’t want to show
weakness to outsiders. As her friend, I have
to take care of her. She’s also my teammate.
Can you be more understanding?”

I just laughed, and my eyes instantly started
welling up.
I never thought I’d hear Chad call me
“malicious.”
We’d known each other for twenty years,
been together for six.
And that wasn’t worth as much as the year he
knew Tiffany.
I held back the tears, grabbed the jewelry box
from the floor, and shoved it into his hands.
“Chad, goodbye.”
I never wanted to see him again.
