Chapter 13
Carter’s POV
“Are you even listening to me, Carter!” Megan’s annoyingly high–pitched voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
I just wanted to get out of here. Frankly, I didn’t even know what I was doing here. I should have just cancelled.
I completely lost interest in whatever Meghan was saying. Even her jokes were no longer funny to me. All I could think about was Veronica.
For someone who loved me so dearly, it was a fatal blow that she could leave me without even bothering to look back.
“You wanted to cat, didn’t you?” I said dryly. “Let’s maintain table manners, shall we?”
Surprise coated her features. “Is everything okay? You haven’t been yourself since we got here,” she said.
I haven’t been myself since my wife left me. Not that she needed to know that. She definitely wouldn’t care or worse, try to emotionally blackmail

Meghan placed a hand on my shoulder. “Whatever the matter is, you can tell me, trust me,” she said softly.
I sighed, “It’s really none of your business. Let’s just eat and leave.”
The words came out harsher than I intended but I hoped it would be enough to get her to back off. To my surprise, her eyes watered instead.

My intention was immediately captured by someone walking towards the restroom at the far end of the room.
The posture and mannerisms were just like Veronica’s, and even the side profile gave some sort of confirmation. The expensive red dress suggested otherwise but I wasn’t going to take any chances. I immediately sprang to my feet.
“Carter?” Meghan called after me but I didn’t answer her or even take my eyes off the woman walking ahead of me. “Where are you going?”
I increased my pace and reached her just before she got into one of the bathroom stalls.
“Veronica?” I called, and she immediately froze, confirming my
suspicions. Shutting the door behind me, I caught her arm and spun her around before she could escape.
Her beautiful eyes were missing their usual warmth as she glared at me. I pulled her into a hug immediately not minding it.
“God, I miss you,” I muttered under my breath. Taking in that rosy scent like it was a lifeline. “Where have you been? I searched everywhere for you.”
For a moment, she remained stiff in my arms, not returning my hugs, and then she shoved me away from her like I was some sort of disgusting parasite.
“You can’t just hug someone out of the blue without their permission,” she said coldly. “And where I have been is none of your business!”
I was taken aback for a second. The Veronica I know would be dying to get a hug from me, but instead, she was acting like my very presence disgusted her.
“Why do I need permission to hug my wife huh?” I huffed.
“Ex–wife!” She corrected. “I no longer belong to you!”
My eyes raked through her and I immediately noticed that this wasn’t her usual mode of dressing. She is always more simple plain clothes, but this was a diamond–stoned mini–dress. Even her necklace was pure diamond and I could tell it cost a fortune..
There was no way she could afford that, even if she was saving up. Anger and jealousy welled in my chest.
“Who got you this?” I demanded. “Is he the one you are staying with? You have a sugar daddy already? Just what… few days after a meaningless fight?”
A bitter laugh escaped her.

I didn’t care how desperate I sounded but I couldn’t afford to lose her again. I was ready to be better for her. I slowly took her hands.
“Please come home with me, I will make things right. That man… whoever you’re with right now, is only you to ruin us. Look at you, just a few days and he is already trying to change you. You don’t even like short dresses!” I said and she snatched her hand from me.
“I have always liked short dresses. You wouldn’t know because you’ve never taken me on anything other than a business trip!” She spat. “You talk about another man when you can’t even take care of a woman!”
The words struck a nerve inside me.
“So that is what this is about?” I gritted. “You want to galavant around town dressing like a whore? Is that it? You think that man you’re with now is better than me? What does he give you that I can’t? Money? Sex? Because I know for a fact that it isn’t love!”
She paled out immediately and hurt flashed in her eyes. I cursed myself as those beautiful eyes watered.
“Look I’m sorry…” I tried apologizing but she shunned me and tried to leave. I pulled her back, pushing her against the wall. “You are not going anywhere unless you come home with me!”
“And who are you to tell her what to do?” I stiffened on hearing that. familiar voice. I turned to meet my uncle’s icy cold eyes.
My jaw tightened. What was he doing here and how did he know we were in here?
“Orthon?”
“Get your hands off her before I deal with you,” he ordered with a deadly calm voice that made my blood run cold..
