Chapter 21
Carter’s POV
After countless arguments with both my mother and Meghan, I was finally able to get out of the house.
From the news, she didn’t survive the fire, but there was no mention of what morgue they took her body to.
Dammit, I didn’t even believe that she was dead. Which was why I was heading to Orthon’s apartment now.
I had questions and if I didn’t get answers to them, I was going to make sure he rots in prison for murder. Whether he is responsible or not.
On arrival at the apartment building, I met with the housekeeper.
“Where is he?” I asked her.
“I haven’t seen him since he left this morning,” she answered.
I glanced at my watch. It was almost 9 pm and he wasn’t home?
“Do you have any idea of he is coming back tonight?” I asked her.
“I wouldn’t know,” she answered. “But he has never slept out. Is there a problem, sir?”
Lots of them actually but I couldn’t tell her that. It was none of her business. I just wanted to see Orthon
“I’ll wait for him then,” I said. She was a bit skeptical but she didn’t try to convince me otherwise. I moved to the lobby to sit.
Something crossed my mind and I decided to ask her. Since she was his housekeeper, it was normal for her to know who came in and out, right?
“Jane?” I called and she turned to me immediately.
“Yes sir? Is there something you need help with?” She asked politely.
“Has your employer ever brought a woman here?” I asked her. Surprise crossed her features at first then she shook her head.
“I’m really sorry, sir, but I can’t give you such information,” she said.
“Come on. Jane. I’m not a stranger,” i tried to coax her. “He’s my uncle remember? I just want to know if he has anyone in his life. We are starting to get worried for him.”
“Well, he hasn’t brought any strange woman home,” she answered.
“Hmmm…” I nodded. “What about Veronica? You know her right? My wife. She is…”
“I’m sorry sir but like I said, I really can’t give you account of who comes in and goes out of here,” she interrupted.
“How about a hundred thousand dollars?” I asked and her eyes widened. “That’s probably more that thrice your salary. You should take it, especially since I’m only interested in the knowledge. It’s not like I’m some hitman or enemy. I’m family.”
I could see her contemplating, battling her thoughts so I decided to give her a little push.
“Let’s make it two hundred thousand then,” I said and she gasped. “Is that a yes? I can write you a check right now if you want.”
“She only came here once and it was on a rainy night. She was completely soaked and helpless. There were so many bags and I didn’t understand
what was happening. They left the next morning and since then, she hasn’t been here again,” she answered.
My jaw tightened.
My wife was staying with my uncle all this while and I was going crazy searching for her all over the city. It suddenly made sense why I couldn’t find her. How could I when more than half of the men I worked it were under him. The remaining ones didn’t dare cross him.
“Not at all?”
“Yeah, he probably took her to his penthouse or somewhere else entirely,” she shrugged.
“And you have no idea where it could possibly be?” I narrowed my eyes at her.
“Nons, absolutely none,” she affirmed. My instincts told me that she was telling the truth which meant she was no use to me.
“Right! You can leave,” I told her.
“The cheque…” she started slowly and I shot her a glare.
“If you could sell out your boss‘ information for such a merger amount of money, then you don’t deserve to be employed,” I hissed. “With staff like you, who needs enemies. It means you will be willing to poison him if I offered the right amount of money! To think he has done so much for you! Sponsored your children, given you a home and a car to ease your movements and yet, it still wasn’t enough.”
She immediately panicked, realising how much was at stake.
“No… I’m sorry please. I don’t need the money, you can keep it but please don’t let him know,” she pleaded desperately and I huffed.
Before I could respond to her, his car drove in and she immediately sprang to her feet.
She shot me a pleading look but I ignored her. I was here for my wife, not one else.
I waited for him to walk in before taking long strides to him.
“Where is my wife. Orthon?” I demanded and he looked at me like I had lost my freaking mind.
“What are you doing in my house?” He asked and my fists clenched.
“That doesn’t answer my question! Where is Veronica? Where are you hiding her?” I growled.
“Are you retarded?” He retorted, catching my off guard. “You didn’t see my off guard. “You didn’t see on the news that she was dead? You need me to interpret it for you?”
“I don’t believe you! Or whatever fake information is spreading around! I know you have my wife and I want her back now before I involve the police!” I threatened.
He could almost immediately get himself out which was a painful annoying fact I didn’t want to think about.
“Veronica is dead and gone but if you think it is fake, it is none of my business. Go to the media houses and rant! I’m tired, I have a long day tomorrow so I need to sleep.”
It was infuriating how calm his voice was when I was boiling.
“Fine then, let’s say she’s dead. Where is her corpse?” I asked and he raised a brow.
“What?”
10:57 P
“Her corpse, I want to see it.”
