Chapter 23
Veronica’s POV
“Why didn’t you tell me before bringing that thing into my house?” I could hear Betty’s voice from the room I stayed in.
Normally, all the rooms in the house were supposed to be soundproof but I was certain that she purposely opened the room so that I would hear everything.
“She is my daughter! What do you mean by thing?” My father’s voice followed.
“And you didn’t bother to tell me that you had a daughter this old? You didn’t think I deserved to know simply because I haven’t even been able to give you a child?” she fired.
“You know that is not true, Betty. I lost all hopes of finding her. For years. 1 searched and searched. I almost thought she was dead,” he responded. “You didn’t expect me to kick my only child out in the streets simply because you weren’t informed!” He retorted.
“Are you even listening to yourself? Some stranger showed up at your doorstep and you didn’t even bother to confirm if she was your daughter or not, you just took her in!” She ranted. “What if she is an imposter?”
“Unfortunately, she is not. Not only is she a splitting image of her mother, I actually made my findings. If you are worried about a DNA test, it was conducted!” He answered.
I was shocked because I didn’t even know that he conducted a DNA test. Since the day he addressed me as his daughter at first sight, he didn’t call me to go to the hospital with him.
I sat back on the bed refusing to think about it. If he confirmed it then fine, I had bigger things to worry about.
“She can’t stay here, Meshach. I will not allow it! She can’t just show up here and reap from all the years I suffered to build with you!” She fired.
“What do you mean build?” He snapped. “I was a billionaire way before. you met me. I come from a long generation of elites so what the fuck did you build with me?!”
She fell silent for a while and I chuckled inwardly.
“Well. I am your wife and it doesn’t change anything…”
“You are my ex–wife! Don’t forget that. You have filed for a divorce thrice. already and now you’re suddenly my wife?” He hissed.
I waited for her comeback for almost a minute.
“I don’t know whatever your plan is with that woman but I will not let it happen! She will gather her things and leave this house, I swear it!”
I stood up from my bed and walked out of the room. I moved downstairs. to the kitchen to make myself some omelettes while she was busy ranting and screaming her lungs out.
She must have heard my footsteps because a few minutes after I entered the kitchen, she entered as well.
I ignored her and picked a bowl to break the eggs into.
“You think you have won, right?” She hissed and I ignored her. I’ve already had seven years of all these bullshit.
I proceeded to break the eggs only for her to stomp over to where I stood and empty the eggs in the sink.
Before I could even speak, she grabbed the crate of eggs and threw it across the kitchen.
My jaw hung in shock. No way she just did that!
“What is your problem?!” I yelled at her and she gave a maniacal laugh.
“My problem is you walking into my home and acting like you own the place!” She retorted.
I didn’t know whether to laugh or get angry. I simply dropped the bowl and decided to leave the damn kitchen for her but she grabbed my arm and pulled me back. She was asking for a fight.
How the hell did my father even meet such a troublesome woman?
“I am going to give you two hours to get your things and leave or else…”
“Else what?” I finally spoke up. She was startled by the question and for a few seconds she couldn’t muster a response. “Look, I don’t care who you are to my father but I’m going to advise you to stay the fuck away from me. Don’t even make the mistake of passing my silence for weakness. You just arrived so I advise you focus your energy on getting a good night’s sleep.”
I walked out of the kitchen without waiting for her response. I’ve never met a more annoying person in my life!
As I got back to my room, I met my phone ringing. I picked it up to see it was Orthon. A smile made it’s way to my lips.
“Vee, there’s a situation,” his urgent tone caught me off–guard.
“What happened?” I asked, my heart race picking up. I had a feeling it was something I definitely didn’t want to hear.
“Firstly, Carter has been demanding to see your corpse and then
grandfather is about to undergo surgery. He slumped after hearing the news of your death.” he said and my breath hitched..
Grandfather was in the hospital? Like Carter’s grandfather? The man who loved me unconditionally and took care of me through everything?
“Vee? Listen I have a plan…”
I hung up and immediately grabbed my coat from the drawer.
I didn’t care what stupid plan I put up. I was going to see him! I couldn’t let him die because of me. I would never be able to forgive myself.
