Chapter 47

Orthon’s POV
I thought it would be easy to move on and just forget any of this ever happened. but some things are easier said than done.
Every time I saw her. all I could think about was the fact that no matter how good I was to her, no matter how much I tried to be the man she deserved. I would truly convince her to let me into her heart. To give me a chance to treat her the way she deserves to be treated.
And it made my heart hurt so much. Especially when she could easily forget those beautiful things we shared and just casually moved on like it meant nothing.
Yet the kiss lived rent–free in my head, replaying over and over in a loop.
“I’ll take my leave now,” the words came out of my mouth before I could stop them.
Her eyes widened in surprise and I immediately turned to leave because I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to deal with it yet. I walked out of the house but she followed me.
I stopped by my car and turned to her, keeping my face as neutral as possible.
“What is it, Veronica? Is there something you need?” I asked her.
“Why are you being so cold to me, Orthon? I thought we agreed that things would remain the same between us.”
The truth was that things could never remain the same between us. I would much rather go home and drink away the pain but I couldn’t exactly leave her to just do everything on her own.
“Yes… we did.” I sighed, pushing my hands through my hair. “It’s just hard, you know… give me some time, okay?”
Her expression softened and it made my chest hurt even more. I didn’t want her to feel sorry for me. It made me feel like shit.
“I just need a little time to get over it. Can you give me that?” I asked her. Avoiding her hurt me a lot more than it hurt her but I needed a break.
Veronica hesitated, her lips parting as if to say something, but she quickly. pressed them together. The silence between us stretched, heavy and suffocating. and I could feel her searching for the right words.
“Okay,” she finally whispered, her voice barely audible but laced with emotion. “Take all the time you need, Orthon. But please… don’t shut me out completely.”
I nodded, unable to respond. If I opened my mouth, I was afraid I’d say something I couldn’t take back. I climbed into my car, gripping the steering wheel like it was the only thing tethering me to reality. Veronica stood there, her arms wrapped around herself, watching as I started the engine.
As I drove off, I couldn’t help but glance at her in the rearview mirror. She looked small, fragile, and utterly alone. A pang of guilt stabbed at me, but I told myself it was necessary. I needed distance. I needed clarity.
The night air was crisp, and the city lights blurred as I sped through the streets, my thoughts a chaotic mess. I couldn’t stop replaying her words, her expression, the way she looked at me like I was breaking her heart. It wasn’t fair. Not to her, not to me.
I decided to pay my father a visit to get my mind off things but also
because I suspected he would be worried about Veronica.
Unfortunately. I arrived to meet chaos. I stood outside, staring at the door. as I wondered what would be the reason for all the yelling.
Sucking in a breath, I walked inside and immediately got the answer to my question.
Meghan.
I wasn’t even surprised. She was the only person who would walk into the mansion and disrupt the peace
This time, she was with her bags and Carter was nowhere to be found, of course. It was just my sister, who was ever in support of Meghan and my father who didn’t like her one bit.
“There is no need to be angry about this, Pa. I am just telling you that Carter is going to marry her next month. It is only right that she move in with us.” Marian said.
“No, your son cannot marry two women at once. He is already married to Veronica. We do not need this headache right here!” He stated.
“With all due respect sir, I am not a headache. Carter loves me very much and besides, Veronica already signed the divorce papers. She doesn’t want to be with him anymore so why can’t I be with him?” Meghan asked.
“There was a divorce and no one thought it wise to inform me about this?” My father fired. “Carter only mentioned they were fighting!”
“They are getting divorced, father,” Marian said gleefully. “That gold- digger will finally leave my son’s life for good.”
I looked at my sister in disbelief. There were times she spoke and I wished she could just keep her mouth shut.
“If anyone should be tagged a gold–digger, it should be this thing your brought in here!” He retorted.
Feeling insulted. Meghan felt the need to interrupt again. “Once again, with all due…”
“Shut your mouth! I am not talking to you!” My father snapped and she flinched. I guess that pissed her up.
“What do you even see in her?” Meghan fired. “I am everything she’s not! I’m hot, classy, beautiful and definitely the kind of woman any man would want to be with!”
“She has a brain! Intelligence! And manners which you clearly lack.” Father snapped and I almost chuckled.
Marian stepped in, her voice dripping with disdain. “Father, you can’t keep living in the past. Veronica’s gone. Carter has moved on. Why can’t you accept that? Meghan is going to be part of this family whether you like it or not.”
I clenched my fists, my jaw tightening as I stood at the edge of the room, unnoticed. This was the circus I had hoped to avoid tonight, but life had other plans. My father’s sharp glare softened when he noticed me.
“Orthon,” he said, his voice heavy with exhaustion. “Please tell me you. have some sense in this madhouse. What do you think of all this nonsense?”
Marian rolled her eyes dramatically. “Oh, great. Here comes the savior.”
I glanced between my father, Marian, and Meghan, whose smug expression only fueled my irritation. It was tempting to lash out, but I knew better. Instead, I crossed my arms and took a slow, deliberate breath.
“I think I need a drink,” I sighed. “I’m having a headache already.”
“Why would you even ask him when his mentor is literally the one sponsoring Veronica’s promiscuity,” Meghan huffed and I froze on the
spol.
“I beg your pardon?” My jaw tightened as my gaze snapped to her. Her lips quivered a little as she was clearly intimidated by me but that wasn’t enough to hint her to keep her freaking mouth shut.
“Are you going to deny it? Or pretend you don’t know that Meshach Peyton is Veronica’s new sugar daddy. Not only has she been spreading her legs for him, she is also pregnant with his child!” She stated and I was beyond shocked.
My father mirrored my exact expression, but Marian didn’t seem too surprised.
I didn’t know whether to laugh or get angry. This had to be the most. ridiculous thing I have ever heard.
“And where did you get this stunning news if I may ask?” I asked.
“Does it matter if it is true?” She retorted and I chuckled. Her level of ignorance was just amusing.
“Is this true, Orthon?” My father asked.
“I think you should direct that question to Meghan, father, since she’s the newly appointed Minister for Information.“
