I tossed and turned all night.
When I woke up late the next morning and
checked my phone, I saw the news: Jake was
back in the States.
The guy who’d been rumored to be single for
this time

It was a young woman.
She was wearing a mask, so you couldn’t see
her face.
But something about her eyes seemed
familiar.
For the last five years, people online had been
saying Jake was still single because he hadn’t
gotten over that mysterious violinist.
Now, he had skipped the VIP lounge at the
airport.
He was walking through the regular terminal
with this girl.

His fans went wild, excited about the rare
chance to see their idol up close.
Security struggled to hold them back.
The crowd pushed Jake and the girl a few
times.
Jake instinctively put his arm around the girl,
shielding her from the crush.
The fans noticed and screamed even louder.
It was obvious that Jake’s first new romance
in five years was about to blow up the
internet.
I stared at the familiar, long–gone face on the
screen, feeling dazed.

A sharp pain ran through me, sudden and
unprovoked.
I thought my connection to Jake had ended
with that phone call.
Someone I hadn’t seen in five years, someone
I would never see again.
But the next day, my teacher called me to the
set of a movie, and I saw him there.
