The journey of life
Chapter 1
My adopted sister, Brittany, is obsessed with
using suicide threats to get her way.
It’s her favorite tactic to keep my real sister,
Ashley, from moving in.
Mom and Dad fall for it every single time.
And after she gets what she wants, she
always rubs it in Ashley’s face, hoping she’ll
just give up.
So, when she pulled the suicide stunt again, I
called the psych ward.
“I think my sister’s got some serious issues.
L
Hope you guys can help.”
The day I finally met my biological sister,
Ashley, Mom was a mess, all teary–eyed and
clutching her hand.
“It’s so good to have you home, baby, so
good.”
“And you can change your name back now, to
Ashley Miller.”
Ashley’s eyes were red, and she nodded real
soft.
“Okay.”
Then she turned to me, like she was scared.
I gave her a warm smile.
Her eyes just lit up like a puppy’s.
“Aaaah!!!”
Our housekeeper, Maria, screamed from
upstairs, then came running down the stairs
like a bat out of hell.
“Mrs. Miller, oh God, Brittany, she’s cut her
wrists!”
Mom’s face went white. She dropped Ashley’s
hand and bolted upstairs.
Ashley’s face just fell.
I saw it all.
Last time around, when I heard Brittany had
cut borself I freaked

cut herself, I freaked. I rushed upstairs with
Mom and we got her to the hospital.
But the doctors found only a scratch.
Brittany, pale as a ghost, burst into tears
when she saw us.
“I’m so sorry, Mom, Sarah. I was just so
scared. I thought you wouldn’t want me
anymore because of her.”
“I didn’t mean to cause trouble right now.”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”
Mom held her tight, comforting her, “Honey,
no matter what, you’re my baby girl.”
I felt the same way back then. I was so
く
protective of the sister I’d spoiled since she
was little. That’s when I started resenting
Ashley.
Until the end, Brittany teamed up with some
jerk and screwed over the whole Miller family.
They bankrupted us, Dad died, Mom jumped
off a building, and my life became a living
hell.
All because she thought Ashley was getting
more attention.
Well, not this time. This time, I’m taking back
all the love.
I looked at Ashley, who was standing there
looking totally lost.
She was so skinny from being poor. But her
eyes showed she wasn’t giving up.
Just like Dad.
I walked over and took her hand.
“Come on, I’ll show you your room.”
She looked at me like I was crazy, stuttering,
“Sarah, shouldn’t we, like, go to the hospital
to see your sister?”
“You’re my only sister. Her mom switched you
at birth, which is a crime. The fact that I’m
letting her stay is generous. You’re Ashley
Miller, the real deal.”
I set her up in the room next to mine.
く
“This room gets the best light. See if you
need anything. I’ll take you shopping.”
She shook her head. “No, no, it’s fine.”
I handed her a bank card.
“This is your allowance. Twenty grand a
month.”
