- 7.
Brittany froze.
I didn’t pay her any mind and walked toward
the door.
But I didn’t get far before she grabbed my
arm again.
“You want a divorce? Come back to the office
with me now.”
She pulled me toward the door.
I didn’t want to go, but I figured it would be
easier to get the divorce over with if I did.
<
Brittany was gripping my arm really tight. It
was starting to hurt.
I looked down and saw her knuckles were
white.
She was shaking all over.
Brittany kept trying to get me to help the
company.
I ignored her, looking out the window as the
buildings flew by.
“Time to leave this city.”
This city was full of memories of Brittany.
I used to think they proved our love, but now
they just made me sick.
We got to the office.
No matter what Brittany said, I only said one
thing.
“Divorce papers.”
Brittany tried being nice, but I didn’t budge.
Then she got angry.
“So, Ethan, you knew Chad was behind all
this, and you didn’t say anything?”
“You waited for Mr. Henderson to come in
and make a scene.”
“Maybe our competitors were just waiting for
something like this to happen before
attacking.”
く
I frowned.
“I didn’t tell you?”
That shut her up.
“I told you more than once that I didn’t do it.”
“And what did you say?
“That Chad covered up my tracks and saved
me from jail.”
“Did you even think? The logs were deleted
when the server crashed.”
“It was planned.”
“You believed his BS, but you wouldn’t listen
to
“Blame me for not saying anything? You’re
kidding, right?”
I finally exploded, but it wasn’t what Brittany
wanted to hear.
Her eyes were tearing up, but she stayed
stubborn.
“Why couldn’t you have shown me some
proof?”
“Proof? Chad destroyed all the proof. And I
tried!”
“The night it happened was our anniversary. I
made a reservation for dinner. I told you there
were cameras!”
“What did you say? That I was lying. Later, I
く
found out you were at the office with Chad.”
I was furious and slammed my hand on the
desk.
“Sign the divorce papers now.”
Brittany looked scared.
“Ethan, don’t do this. I’m… scared.”
I didn’t want to talk anymore.
I used to give Brittany everything she wanted.
Even when she was being cold, I’d do
anything for her.
Even when I was tired, I’d be there for her.
I worked nonstop, making sure the company’s
<
products were up–to–date. I was always
thinking about her.
But she never thought about me.
Now, when I finally lost it, she showed me her
soft side.
“Hurry up. I don’t want to talk to you
anymore.”
