Chapter 15
When Melanie woke up, only David went to
the hospital room.
He stayed there for half an hour.
Leona was on pins and needles, her mind racing with thoughts of how to cover up
her actions.
When David finally came out with a stern face, Leona looked up and met his gaze.
Her heart skipped a beat and she began to speak hesitantly, “Dad, how is Mom?”
David’s face was pale, his eyes glaring at the woman before him. “Don‘ t call me Dad! Do you think we‘ re all fools?”
It wasn’t the first time Leona had seen
her father lose his temper, but no matter how much she tried to comfort herself, hearing his shouting still made her flinch.
The confidence she had earlier when
arguing with Melanie at home was gone.

Her eyes immediately welled up, as David had always been someone whose word was
law.
“No, I really care about you and Mom,” she
stammered.
These words might have worked on Melanie, but they were useless with him.
“We’ve been together for so many years and I’ll let you leave with dignity. From now on, you’re no longer a member of the Shawn Family.”
His face was expressionless and Leona knew he was serious.
In her panic, she started crying, knowing that whenever she cried as a child, her parents would always soften.
“Dad, how can you do this to me?”
She was scared. She was terrified of leaving this home. For all these years, she had lived off the identity of Kate.
She couldn’t accept being left with nothing.

But she had forgotten how much David had once pampered her and now, he despised her just as much.
He didn’t even want to look at her, not even
once.
Not even if she knelt before him.
“Don’t ever let me see you again.”
This was the last thing David said to Leona.
Ten minutes later, news that Leona had been kicked out of the family spread through the circle.
David personally made a statement,
declaring that Leona was no longer related to them in any way.
He had nailed her to the pillar of shame and everyone knew she was a fraud.
Those who had once despised her began to openly gossip.
Even those she had looked down on started
to mock her.

She stared at the news on her phone, her expression a mixture of tears and laughter.
Even she couldn’t believe it. Everything she had, all gone today.
Now, she was like a rat in the street, anyone. who saw her could shout insults.
Sitting on the bench, staring at the door, a fire began to burn in her heart.
It was hatred–she hated this hypocritical
family.
She couldn’t accept it. Why did Kate still get everything she once had?
Why was she treated this way?
She secretly swore to herself that she
would take back everything that was once
hers.
David sat by Melanie’s bedside, looking at her pale face.
It was a look she hadn’t seen in a long time and it pained him.

She stared blankly at him and whenever Kate was mentioned, her eyes would involuntarily redden.
Which mother didn‘ t love her own child?
But she had let her daughter suffer for so
many years.
David spoke words of comfort, but he knew all too well how Kate had lived those years.
When all the truth was revealed, it was like a thunderclap on a clear day.
It left David feeling unsettled. The two of them exchanged a glance and they both understood.
Melanie, struggling to keep her eyes open, asked David, “Do you think Kate will forgive us?”
David gave her a faint smile and nodded.
After Melanie fell asleep, he stepped into the hallway and smoked a cigarette.
Unable to find Kate, it was the answer she
