I took a couple of days off and went to the
next town for a breather.
During that time, Ethan didn’t contact me.
Before, we’d talk almost every day.
Soon, I was back to my normal self.
And back to my job.
My coworkers asked, “Where’s that rich
hottie? How come he hasn’t brought you
lunch the last couple days?”
<
Before, he had been so obvious. Everyone
knew how he treated me.
I said, “He’s busy. He’s not coming anymore.”
But as soon as I said that, my coworker got
back with the take–out food. “Didn’t you say
he wasn’t coming? I just saw him downstairs.
He’s here for you, right?”
A glimmer of hope sparked inside.
I pulled out my phone.
No messages from him.
My coworker pulled me to the window. “I’m
sure that’s him. Go on, go see.”
My hands were shaking.
<
Then, I saw a girl approach him.
I’d met her before.
She was one of the most persistent in
chasing Ethan, Ashley.
Ashley was well–off and spoiled. When she
found out about me and Ethan, she went to
see me and said that she was going to make
my life miserable.
I got mad, and we got into a fight.
Ethan showed up, angrier than I had ever
seen him. He told her to leave.
Then, he carefully wrapped my wounds. “You’re a little beast, huh?” He chuckled.
“Don’t worry. She’ll never bother you again.”

In that moment, I thought that maybe he liked
me too.
If I just broke down that wall, I could be with
him.
Ashley was talking to Ethan. He was slowly
smiling, then he laughed.
I hated how good my eyesight was.
Soon, Ethan opened the car door.
I thought that maybe it was my imagination,
but he looked my way, then, he looked back
down.
Ashley got into the car.
The coworker laughed awkwardly. “Maybe I
く
was mistaken.”
I said, “No. That was him.”
He was there, just not for me.
