Soon, everyone in the office knew that Ethan
and I were done.
Someone asked quietly, “Did he dump you?”
I shook my head. “No. We were never even
together.”
They gaped. “I thought you guys were just
trying to keep it under wraps.”
No. We had never been together.
く
No one could believe it.
The rich Ethan, was being so nice to me and
making my life easier just because we were
friends?
He probably doesn’t even remember all the
things he’s done for me.
Then, she added: “Did you know that he went
to see the big boss, Mr. Chen, and talked in
his office for like a long time?”
I was stunned.
I didn’t know that.
He hadn’t told me.
But thinking back, it was obvious.
<
There was that manager that used to pick on
- me. Suddenly, he was demoted and shipped
off to another department.
…And then there were so many projects that
were given to me when it should have gone to
someone else.
I threw myself into work.
I avoided all places where I might run into
Ethan.
I actually didn’t see him again.
It was two weeks later when I heard his name
again.
I was out shopping with a friend when a
young man walked up to me.
<
His name was Finn, one of Ethan’s friends.
He had a girl with him, someone I hadn’t seen
before. Probably his girlfriend.
Finn saw me and looked delighted. “Liv?”
I nodded, saying hello.
He laughed. “I just got back from a trip
abroad. It’s been a while. Let’s grab dinner
tonight. We can invite Ethan.”
I was about to say, “No…”
But he had already made a call.
“Ethan, wanna grab dinner tonight?”
He accidentally hit speakerphone. Ethan’s
voice was calm, emotionless. “Sure, send me
the address.”
“Got it. By the way, Liv’s here, I already invited her. Why don’t you pick her up?”
After he said that, Ethan was silent for a long
time, before he finally spoke.
His voice sounded a little hoarse, a little tired.
“I’ve got a meeting tonight, you guys can go
without me.”
Then he hung up.
