His shouting attracted the attention of residents upstairs. Someone opened a window and yelled, “Take your lovers‘ quarrel somewhere else! Shut up or I’m calling the cops!”
“Sorry about that! My girlfriend and I had a fight. I’ll take her home now,” Lucas called back.
I realized if he took me away, that might be the end of me.
So I fought through the dizziness and felt for my keys in my pocket.
Lucas let his guard down as my body went limp. When I started to mumble something, he leaned in close to hear what I was saying.
As his face got near mine, I grabbed my keys and stabbed them into his eye, then yanked them out.
“Ahhh!” Lucas screamed in pain, clutching his eye.
I took advantage of his injury and ran towards the parking garage as fast as I could.
As I got further from Lucas, I gradually regained my strength.
He must have used some kind of drug on me. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have gotten so weak.
I ran and ran, terrified he would catch me.
When I finally reached my car, I jumped in and locked the doors.
With shaking hands, I called the police. I was in no condition to drive, so I could only wait for them in the garage.
For the next few minutes, I was terrified Lucas would show up before the police arrived.
I sat curled up in the seat, my head between my knees, quietly sobbing.
Suddenly, I heard fingers tapping on the window. Thinking it was the police, I looked up.
But it wasn’t the police. It was Lucas, his left eye gouged out, pressed against my window!
Blood streamed from his eye socket, covering the left side of his face. He looked even more terrifying.
He was holding a fire extinguisher and seemed excited by my horrified expression.
“You’ve been a very naughty girl, haven’t you? I can’t believe you’d do something so vicious. But that’s okay, I like your fiery spirit.
Once I drag you out of there, I’ll gouge out your left eye too. Then we’ll be a perfect match. How does that sound, sweetheart?”
As he threatened me, he started violently smashing my window with the fire extinguisher.
I frantically searched the car and found a fruit knife, which I clutched to my chest defensively.
Thank goodness I had chosen a car with the highest safety rating. That bought me enough time for the police to arrive.
“Freeze! Police!”
Even after hearing the police, the crazed Lucas didn’t stop attacking my car.
It wasn’t until the officers physically restrained him and pinned him to the ground that he finally stopped. But he still managed to threaten me
one last time:
“Don’t worry, sweetie. Big brother will come find you again once I’m out.”
Lucas had illegally obtained citizens‘ personal Information to register SnapChat accounts. He added me as a client and used illegal drugs to
harass me.
After the police arrested him, he faced multiple charges. He was sentenced to five years in prison.

After he went to jail, I didn’t follow the advice of those around me to move to a new city.
Instead, I replayed the events of that day in my mind. At the time, I had been paralyzed by fear and panic, unable to use any of the self–defense moves I had learned.
I was afraid. Afraid I wouldn’t be able to overpower him.
After Lucas went to prison, I privately found a boxing coach who had experience in underground fights.
