Eleanor thought to herself, Why is it that Zoey doesn’t just want to get rid of this child, but she doesn’t even dare to reveal a hint of it?
“Eleanor,” Zoey said, her voice dripping with smug satisfaction, “I know you’re upset, but don’t worry–the worst is yet to come. Elijah said that once the contract is signed, he’ll marry me.”
“See? I told you. No matter what happens, he’ll choose me. You’re just a temporary distraction, someone he doesn’t even have to pay for.”
Zoey chuckled with self–satisfaction, flaunting her triumph before turning and leaving the room.
Eleanor, barely holding herself together, collapsed back onto the bed, pulling the blanket over her head and curling up tightly inside.
Downstairs, Jayden, who had been waiting, looked toward Elijah as he walked in. His voice was stern. “Handled?”
“Yeah,” Elijah replied flatly, his face expressionless.
“Good. This kind of thing would be embarrassing if it got out. Eleanor knows how to be smart about things. We won’t have to keep an eye on her anymore,” Jayden said, his face visibly softening.
Elijah lowered his gaze, the darkness in his eyes swirling, and he spoke quietly, “Because we’re sure she’s not pregnant?”
Jayden furrowed his brows and turned to look at him. “What are you getting at?”
“If she were pregnant…”
Jayden cut him off, irritation in his voice. “The public would have already accepted the situation. If she
were pregnant, we’d just handle the child quietly. If she doesn’t want it, we can take care of both her and the baby without a problem. Plus, Lily is here at the Davis family; she’ll behave. Elijah, remember your place.”
“Yeah.” Elijah didn’t respond further, his face unreadable.
Jayden clasped his hands behind his back and walked away. “Don’t forget your responsibilities for the sake of irrelevant people. I’m leaving.”
With that, he turned and left.
Avery, who had been watching from a distance, hurried over. “Elijah, your clothes are soaked. Go change before you catch a cold.”
Elijah glanced down, the wet hem of his long coat clinging to his pants, still dripping water.
He ignored Avery’s concern and instead lit a cigarette, the tip glowing briefly as he took a deep drag. He exhaled a cloud of smoke, his eyes cold and dark, even in the daylight.
Eleanor lay beneath the covers, trying to calm herself.
Before long, Lily entered, dragging Nick along.

“Lily, are you and Elijah both out of your minds? I’m an internist, not a gynecologist. I can’t treat menstrual cramps. Please, cut me some slack…”

Nick was exasperated. He regretted not listening to his family’s advice and going into business instead.
Eleanor, hearing their voices, rubbed her eyes and quickly sat up.
“Mom, I’m fine. Don’t make things difficult for Nick.”
Both of them turned to look at her, and Lily hurried over, sitting beside her and gently touching her face.
“Eleanor, where does it still hurt?”
Eleanor smiled faintly. “It doesn’t hurt anymore. Just inhaled some water, and my throat is a bit scratchy.”
“Don’t worry, just drink some warm water.”
Nick, ever the professional, approached and began to check her over.
Before, Eleanor had been too far away to notice any oddities about him. But now that he was close, she couldn’t help but be startled by what she saw.
“Nick… did you get into a fight?”
“A fight? I was just resting, and then someone grabbed me by the neck and dragged me into the ER. There I was, stuck with three gynecologists, all staring at each other in confusion. You know what they asked me?”
Nick exaggerated the scene for comic effect.
Eleanor, still unsure, asked, “What did they ask?”
Nick cleared his throat, imitating a female doctor’s voice. “Nick, are you here to, uh… preserve the fetus? Or is it just for your period?”
“Now you get where my injuries came from? Next time, remind your friend not to choke me, okay?”
It took a moment, but Eleanor finally understood what he meant.
However, she didn’t show any change in her expression. She kept her eyes lowered and didn’t say a word.
Nick, oblivious to her mood, looked around before asking, “Where’s Elijah? Didn’t he stay with you?”
“He left,” Eleanor replied coldly.
Elijah had only stayed by her side to ensure she didn’t speak out of turn when she woke up.
Nick sensed the sudden shift in the atmosphere. He didn’t know what to say and quickly changed the subject. “I’ll go check on the medicine to see if it’s ready.”
As soon as Nick left, Lily, unable to hold back, started to speak.
“Actually, Elijah earlier…”
“Mom, please stop talking about him,” Eleanor interrupted impatiently.
