But Ellie had never undergone any matching tests, yet Jayden somehow knew the matching was successful.
If Eleanor hadn’t hidden away in the villa with Ellie, Jayden would have probably pushed them to compromise long ago.
But who would have thought that, in the end, it would be her own father who put her on the operating table?
Looking back now, there were few people who would have gone as far as helping Zoey fabricate evidence -Lilliana was one of them.
It was Lilliana who had put Ellie on the Davis family’s radar.
Eleanor clenched her fist unconsciously, her nails digging into her palm as she thought back to everything that had happened.
“Eleanor? Eleanor. Are you still with me?”
Lily’s voice broke through Eleanor’s thoughts.
She took a deep breath, quickly regaining her composure. “I’m listening, Mom. Go on.”
Lily continued, “I found out that Zoey and Lilliana often gather at a bar for their sisterhood meet–ups. Oh, and Lilliana seems to have someone she likes. One of my old colleagues said Lilliana regularly orders a men’s watch from a luxury brand, and she likes to have the initials of the man’s name engraved on the
strap.”
“What initials?” Eleanor asked.
Lily said, “N.B.”
The moment those initials were said, Eleanor’s mind went blank.
She couldn’t think of anyone whose initials were N.B.
After a long pause, she finally said, “Mom, can you keep an eye on her? Let me know the next time they have a gathering.”
Lily hesitated before answering, her voice tinged with unease. “Eleanor, what exactly are you planning to do? Didn’t you always want to stay away from Zoey and her people?”
Eleanor bit her lip, standing up and walking to the window, staring out at the sky where Ellie once looked at her with hope.
In the past, yes, she had felt that way because she had promised Ellie that she would become a successful jewelry designer, that she would climb higher and higher, making up for all their past regrets.
Her sole goal had been to escape the fate she was born into and to fulfill her and Ellie’s dream.
But when she lay in that hospital bed, hearing Elijah threaten her to side with Zoey, the blood spreading from her body was like reliving the agony of losing Ellie all over again.
If she hadn’t taken birth control pills back then, Ellie would have been nothing but a stain of blood today.

The seed of hatred she had buried deep within her finally sprouted. She could never forget Zoey’s smug face.
Zoey, if you love to provoke so much, then let’s see how you like losing the one thing you care about the
most.
Eleanor closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. When she opened them again, her face was eerily calm as she said, “Mom, don’t overthink it. I just feel like our situation is a little unstable. Having a little leverage might come in handy.”
Lily didn’t question her further. In fact, she felt that Eleanor was being quite prudent.
“You’re right. I’ll keep an eye on Lilliana. But it’s getting late. You should get some rest. Logan took a call and left, but he still hasn’t come back. It’s keeping me up.”
“You didn’t try calling him?”
Eleanor lay back down on the bed, her concern evident as she asked.
Lily sighed, “I’ve tried, but I can’t get through. It’s probably something urgent at work. This has happened before. I’ll wait a bit longer.”
“Mm, don’t stay up too late.”
After their conversation ended, Eleanor closed her eyes and tried to sleep.
Later that night, Eleanor was half–asleep when her phone buzzed beside her pillow.
She groggily reached for it and answered, “Hello?”
“Eleanor, you need to come to the hospital right away.”
Hearing the urgency in the voice, Eleanor immediately sat up in bed.
“Logan? What happened? Why are you at the hospital?”
“It’s not me–it’s Jaxen. He’s still unconscious and keeps calling your name, so I called you.” Logan’s voice was filled with helplessness.
“Jaxen? What happened to him?” Eleanor asked as she hurried out of bed.
“He got into a car accident on his way back from a business trip. He didn’t want his mom to worry, so his secretary called me,” Logan explained.
“I’m on my way.”
Eleanor hung up the phone and rushed to the door. She grabbed a coat from the hallway and raced to the hospital.
By the time she arrived, Jaxen had been pushed back to his room after being treated in the emergency
room.
She met Logan in the hallway.
“How is he?” Eleanor asked anxiously.

“He’s got a broken arm and several cuts and bruises, but thankfully nothing too serious. He’ll be fine with some rest. He just woke up–go ahead and see him. I’m going to check with the doctor about his follow–up treatment,” Logan said.
“Okay.”
Eleanor nodded and pushed the door open, walking into the room.
Hearing her, Jaxen weakly lifted his gaze and even managed a smile.
“Eleanor, what are you doing here? It’s nothing major.”
Jaxen’s once fair, handsome face was now bruised and battered, making him look almost unrecognizable. It was a terrifying sight.
