Zoey’s post read, “The moment my hand started hurting, someone immediately called in a renowned expert to check on me.”
Eleanor turned off her phone, her lips curling bitterly as she glanced at her own hand. The irony stung.
A moment later, after the doctor’s check–up, Eleanor insisted on being discharged.
“Miss Brown, I strongly advise you stay in the hospital for a few more days. Your hand is still vulnerable, and if it gets worse, you might never be able to write again,” the doctor said, concerned.
“Tll be careful,” Eleanor replied, determined.
She had more important things to do.
Back at school, Eleanor pushed open the door to the dorm. Her roommates were gone, likely off to interviews as they’d mentioned in the group chat.
She opened her cupboard, her eyes narrowing as she looked at her belongings.
Just as she reached for something, a voice called out behind her.
“Eleanor.”
Eleanor froze, then turned around just in time to see Julian rush toward her, slapping herself hard across the face. “Eleanor, I’m sorry.”
“It’s my fault,” Julian continued, hitting herself again, “I was so desperate. Dylan said it would just be a few words from your account, and I believed him. You know how my mom always says I’m wasting money by going to college, so I fell for it. Please, pity me.”
As Julian slapped herself repeatedly, she tried to guilt–trip Eleanor into accepting her apology.
Eleanor ignored her, feigning a dazed expression as she watched Julian slap herself several more times.
Julian dared not stop, even as her face turned red. Eleanor finally intervened.
“Enough, it’s too late for apologies now.”

Julian’s eyes lit up as if a thought occurred to he “Eleanor, what happened? Is your hand hurt? Does that mean you can’t compete?”
Eleanor glanced at her, then sighed dramatically
“The doctor says my hand might never fully recover, and I’m afraid I can’t compete anymore,” she said weakly, letting her hand drop
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Julian’s smog little smile.
The next second, Julian’s expression shifted to one of feigned concern. “Eleanor, don’t think too much about it.”
“Alright, Eleanor replied with a dry smile. “I’m just a little tired. I’ll rest now.”
Julian nodded and left.
Eleanor watched her go, then leaned back on her pillow and smiled to herself. Julian would undoubtedly go tell Zoey everything.
That was exactly what she wanted.
With the competition approaching, she couldn’t afford to make any more mistakes. Throwing out a few misleading hints would allow her to deliver the final blow to Zoey.
On the weekend, Eleanor returned to the Davis family estate.
As she entered, two figures emerged from a car beside her: Monica, the elegant matriarch of the Davis family, and Jaxen, the eldest grandson.
Monica was dressed simply but with an understated grace, wearing only an antique ring on her finger.
It was said to be a token from Arthur, and she had never taken it off after they became engaged.
It was a shame that Arthur was no longer with her.
“Eleanor,” Monica said with a smile, acknowledging her.
Eleanor stepped forward. “Monica.”
Monica smiled warmly, “You always act so distant. You make it feel like we’re strangers

Before they could continue. Jaxen approached canor. “Eleanor, is your hand feeling any better?”
Eleanor looked up. and Jaxen’s refined, handsome face immediately caught her attention. He wore a light gray suit, looking every bit the gentleman.
He was one of the few people in the Davis family who had always shown her kindness.
In her past life, Jaxen had asked her a question.
“Eleanor, will you come with me?”
Unfortunately, at that time, she was too trapped to accept, afraid of dragging him into her
troubles
Afterward, they had disappeared from her life, and the only rumors she’d heard about them. had been unsettling.
Seeing his face again filled Eleanor with a bittersweet nostalgia, and she offered him a sincere smile.
“Jaxen, I’m fine.”
The warmth of his smile seemed to melt the tension around her. “I’m glad to hear that,” he replied.
Eleanor couldn’t help but feel a bit flustered, lowering her gaze.
However, the atmosphere quickly shifted, growing tense as Monica and Jaxen both became notably serious.
Monica gave a subtle nod. “Elijah.”
Jaxen followed suit, saying respectfully, “Elijah.”
Eleanor, still standing still, felt the weight of a cold gaze fall on her. Reluctantly, she turned
around.
“Elijah
Elijah didn’t answer immediately, but the person beside him couldn’t wait to speak up.
Zoey, with a smug look, eyed Eleanor’s injured and before linking her arm with Elijah’s in a familiar gesture.
