Her hands, trembling in panic, were tightly gripping the hem of her skirt, almost as if they might tear it.
She had to win.
Lily had insisted that Eleanor stay the night, but Eleanor refused.
The Davis family held no pleasant memories for her.
Being there only reminded her of the disdain everyone had for her in her past life.
And it brought back the painful memory of her poor daughter. So, as the evening darkened, she decided to leave.
However, as she walked halfway, a sudden gust of wind whipped through the air, and the sky turned a grim shade of gray as though a storm was about to break.
Eleanor quickened her pace, but before she could get very far, the heavy rain began to pour down, soaking her through.
Suddenly, the sound of a car screeching to a halt broke through the noise of the storm. Eleanor held her hand up to shield her head and turned to look.
A man stepped out, holding an umbrella, and quickly walked toward her. The umbrella revealed a striking face.
“Eleanor.”
“Jaxen, what are you doing here?” Eleanor asked a little surprised.
“I went to find Logan. Your mom told me you left. It’s a heavy downpour. Didn’t you notice?” he said, concerned.
“I… I didn’t pay attention,” Eleanor admitted sheepishly.
Jaxen sighed lightly and tilted the umbrella towards her. As they both looked at each other, Eleanor’s hair was dripping wet, her pretty face slightly pale but with lips that still appeared almost too tempting.
The rain–soaked clothes clung tightly to her body, her silhouette now outlined in a way that was impossible to ignore.

Jaxen caught a glance, his breath catching, and he quickly averted his gaze, pulling out a handkerchief to gently wipe her face.
“I’ll take you home. You’ll catch a cold,” he said, is voice soft.
“Thank you, Jaxen, Eleanor replied, knowing she couldn’t take the subway in her current.
state.
They turned to leave, but as they passed, a car rolled slowly past them. Through the barely cracked window, Eleanor could make out two figures inside.
Elijah and Zoey.
Zoey was almost hanging off Elijah, looking as though they were kissing passionately.
Eleanor’s stomach churned at the sight.
As Elijah turned his head and looked in their direction, Eleanor quickly tugged on Jaxen’s
ann.
“Jaxen, let’s go.”
“Alright.”
They walked away without looking back, but Eleanor couldn’t shake the feeling of someone’s gaze on her back.
The sleek black car cut through the rain like a blade, the man inside looking colder and more dangerous than ever.
Inside the car, Zoey, carefully lowering her breath, reached out and gently placed her hand on Elijah’s knee. Her pale fingers slid over his pants, as if reminding him of what had been left unfinished.
“Elijah,” she murmured, leaning in closer, her fingertips lightly tracing circles near his inner thigh.
Just a little more, and she could’ve kissed him.
Just as her hand inched higher, Elijah grabbed her wrist without a glance, his expression impassive..
“Stop,” he said, his voice quiet yet firm. “Avery, pull over ahead. I’ll get out, and you take her
home.”
Avery said, “Yes.”

Zoey, flustered and not understanding, asked, “Eijah, where are you going?”
Elijah glanced at her briefly, his tone indifferent “Business.”
Zocy stared as he left, the venom in her eyes barely concealed.

Meanwhile, Jaxen received a phone
ll from home saying that Monica’s rheumatism had flared up. The cold rain had made it worse, leaving her unable to sleep through the night.
After her husband passed, Monica had been going to church daily for solace, which had strained her knees.
Eleanor pointed to a street corner up ahead. “Jaxen, can you let me off there? I’ll take the subway back. I just need to borrow your jacket.”
“Eleanor…” Jaxen said, a hint of apology in his voice.
“I’m over twenty now, it’s fine. Monica’s probably in a lot of pain right now. You should with her.”

He stopped the car and pulled off his jacket, handing it to her with a reminder to be careful.
Eleanor nodded and got out.
As she watched the car leave, she made her way to the subway, but it was still a distance to her school, so she used the umbrella to shield herself from the wind and rain.
Just before she reached the entrance to the school, the headlights of a car suddenly flashed in her face. She raised her hand to shield her eyes, thinking she had taken a wrong turn.
Just as she was about to step aside, a shadowy figure blocked her path.
She frowned, recognizing the polished leather shoes, and tried to walk past, but a hand suddenly grabbed her umbrella.
She tugged, but a strong gust of wind blew her umbrella away.
