Chapter 47 The Recheck
Chapter 47 The Recheck
Elijah asked, his voice low, “Does your hand still hurt?”
“No, Eleanor responded curtly, her tone cold and distant.

When the car stopped, Eleanor didn’t spare Elijah a glance. Without a word, she exited the vehicle.
Elijah’s eyes flicked to Avery. “Go check what’s going on with her,” he ordered.
Avery hesitated for a moment but nodded. “Yes, sir.”
A few moments later, Eleanor followed Elijah into the office.
The doctor, who had his back to them, immediately turned around when he heard their footsteps. Upon seeing them, he smiled and stepped forward.
“Elijah, it’s been long. What brings you here today?”
“It’s not me. It’s her,” Elijah said, pointing to Eleanor.
But as he looked at Eleanor, he noticed she was staring at the doctor’s face, her complexion suddenly draining of color. Step by step, she took several steps back, clearly unnerved.
“Elena?” Elijah frowned, about to remind her.
Nick, seeing Eleanor’s pale expression, lightly touched his own face and joked, “Looks like I’m a little scary after all.”
Elijah moved toward her, reaching out to grab her, but she pulled away.
“Don’t touch me, Eleanor blurted out, her voice sharp.
Elijah’s face darkened at her rejection.
Nick, sensing the tension in the air, attempted to lighten the mood. “Miss, please have a seat. Let me take a look at your hand.”
Eleanor snapped back to attention and, still not breaking eye contact with the doctor, sat down.
She couldn’t forget his face. He was the one who had delivered the news about her daughter’s death.
Nick was Elijah’s friend, and more than that–he was an accomplice.

It was him who had performed the surgery on her daughter.

Nick began to unwrap the bandages from Eleanor’s hand, but under her unflinching stare, he suddenly felt a chill run down his spine.
He laughed nervously, trying to deflect. “What’s wrong? You think I’m not as charming as Elijah?”
Eleanor didn’t react to his joke. Her mind was flooded with memories–the pale, blue–gray body of her daughter. She could still see it clearly.
With a cold, biting tone, she finally spoke, “Can Lask you something?”
Nick blinked, startled. “Go ahead.”
“What kind of situation would allow a child to donate a kidney to someone else without their mother’s consent?”
Nick froze. He had expected Eleanor to ask about her hand, not about this.
Quickly, he recovered and answered, “Usually, parents don’t mind children donating organs, especially if they’re younger–except for body donations. But either way, it requires the consent of immediate family members.”
“Immediate family members, meaning.
“Parents. The hospital always informs and seeks consent. But beyond that, we also need the child’s consent. Even a small child has preferences, you know?” The doctor smiled faintly, as though this was a simple matter.
Eleanor’s eyes burned with unshed tears, her lips curling into a bitter smile. “So you knew all along.”
She understood now. It was him–helping Elijah hide everything. Sneaking her daughter onto the operating table.
And then Elijah, of course, refused to treat her, letting her succumb to infection and die.
Meanwhile, he was at Zoey’s extravagant son’s birthday party, all suited up, looking the picture of civility.
It was almost too ironic to bear.
Nick’s smile faltered. A cold shiver crept through him. He could feel an inexplicable fear building in his chest. He couldn’t explain it, but the feeling was suffocating.
He took a deep breath and quickly handed over list of tests. “Here’s the list of checks.”

Elijah took the list and handed it to Avery. “You take her for the tests.”
Eleanor rose without a word, her expression unreadable, and walked out of the room.

Nick stepped closer to Elijah, speaking quietly, Her mood’s off. Do you know how she looked at me? Like she wanted to kill me.”
Elijah walked to the window, opened it, and threw a cigarette to his friend. With one hand, he cupped the lighter to ignite it.
His friend took the cigarette but didn’t light it.
Staring at the clouds of smoke surrounding Elijah, he asked, “Who is this woman, really? Why does she get your attention when Zoey got nothing? You didn’t even stay a single night with Zoey after her accident. And that morning, I saw you leaving from another ward. Don’t tell me it was her?”
“Mm. Elijah replied flatly, not bothering to deny it.
Nick nearly stumbled.
He quickly walked over to Elijah, his eyes wide with disbelief. He had just noticed something near Elijah’s collar.
At first, he wasn’t sure. But after a moment, it hit him like a punch to the gut. He froze in shock.
Is that… a hickey? Impossible! Nick thought.
Elijah and Zoey had been together for three years, and even holding hands was rare. To see a mark like that on Elijah’s neck was… inconceivable.
Nick had been Elijah’s classmate back in high school. When he couldn’t make it in finance, he switched to medicine, realizing that medicine could be just as, if not more, terrifying.
Nick was Elijah’s personal doctor now, and he knew Elijah’s health better than anyone. This was why he was so shocked. Every year, during Elijah’s check–ups, everything in certain areas was perfectly clean–so clean, in fact, that it had made Nick uncomfortable to even look at.
He had once even suggested Elijah take some medicine, thinking he had issues in that department.
Elijah had responded with an off–hand remark–I’m just a little obsessive about cleanliness.”
Now, here he was, with a hickey on his neck. Who would believe he was a neat freak?
Nick, trying to remain composed, carefully asked, “That’s a bit… intense. Zoey seems so

delicate, though…”
It’s not her, Elijah said, leaning back against the window, his voice cold.
