As soon as Eleanor entered, she spotted the three roommates she hadn’t seen in ages.

relaxed
In her past life, she had believed Julian’s words, thinking her roommates were out to get her, so she never interacted with them. Instead, she trusted Julian completely.
In the end, when she needed help the most, Julian betrayed her.

about her dire situation from Julian’s gossip, each sent her some money to help her and her daughter through the tough times.
With a smile. Eleanor stepped forward. Her roommates froze, a little shocked at her sudden warmth
She handed them three boxes. “A little gift to celebrate you all finding jobs. Hope you don’t mind.”
One roommate snapped out of her daze, taking the box with a look of surprise. “Perfume? This brand is really expensive! Wow, and it’s my favorite scent!”
The other two roommates also opened their boxes and discovered the same–perfumes they loved.
The three roommates stared at Eleanor, speechless, unsure whether they were dreaming.
Eleanor smiled and explained, “I’ve smelled something similar on you before, so I took a chance and bought these.”
It was true. In her past life, they had written about their favorite scents on their social media.
“Thank you.” They all spoke in unison.
“But… we didn’t get you anything,” one of them added hesitantly..
“Oh, no problem. You three can treat me to this meal.” Eleanor casually picked up a knife and fork, cutting into a piece of rib and shoving it into her mouth.
The roommates were stunned. This meal probably cost a hundred dollars, while the perfumes Eleanor gave them were worth three hundred each. They felt like they were at a loss.

One of them, gathering her courage, asked, “Are you really Eleanor?”

“Want to check?” Eleanor puffed out her cheeks and chewed on the rib, her face amused.
Another roommate reached out to touch her, but was quickly stopped by the third one.
“Eleanor, thank you for coming. We could never get the whole dorm together before. We always envied the other dorms.”
“Yeah, we never understood why you were always with Julian. She… well…” One of them. trailed off.
“Never mind, don’t talk about it.” Another roommate quickly intervened, trying to smooth. things over with a nervous laugh.
Eleanor looked at them and smiled. “I know exactly what you’re going to say. Actually, I should be the one thanking you.”
“Why?” The more naïve roommate looked puzzled.
“I trusted the wrong person for a long time. And yet, you’re still willing to invite me to cat with you. Really, thank you.”
She also wanted to thank them for helping her in her past life.
“You’ve figured it out, haven’t you? Julian had a copy of your key. She used to come to our dorm when you weren’t around. She said you knew about it, so we didn’t question her.”
“By the way, she always played the victim in front of you, pretending to be poor. We tried to warn you, but you told us we were overthinking it. The truth is, behind your back, she’d say you were the one who saw her as poor, bossed her around, and made everyone else avoid you. “We all knew you treated her the best–whenever you brought back something nice. from home, you’d almost always give it to her.”
The two roommates grew more and more upset while the third, more straightforward one. waved her hand dismissively.
“Let’s not talk about that. It’s a nice dinner. No need to ruin it with all this.” She handed Eleanor the menu. “Take a look. Order whatever you want. Don’t be shy.”
“Alright Eleanor opened the menu but quickly lost her appetite. She set it aside. “Let’s just have some drinks.

Soon, each of them ordered two cans of beer–nothing too strong, just enough to feel
relaxed.

But before long, they were drinking more and more, until each of them was half–drunk, barely keeping their eyes open.
Eleanor propped her head up with her hand, the frustration and helplessness welling up inside her. She tilted her head and leaned against one of her roommates‘ shoulders.
“Don’t go back home. I know you want to stay here.”
The roommate blinked in surprise. “How did you know I was planning to go back home?”
Eleanor stressed. “Trust me, don’t go back.”
This roommate had gone back home after just half a year, pressured by her family into marriage, only to suffer abuse and miscarriage.
She sighed. “I did get an interview with a company I like, but they want a bribe to make it happen. I don’t have that kind of money.”
“I’ll give it to you.” Eleanor pulled out Logan’s card and handed it to her. “Don’t go back, alright?”
“You…” The roommate was so moved she nearly cried, the alcohol making her emotions spill
over.
The other two joined in, urging her, “You’re not bad at your field. Your hometown’s a small town, and it’s hard to develop in this industry. You’ve fought so hard to get here, to finish this. degree. Are you really going to go back?”
“Yeah, it’d be such a waste,” the more innocent roommate said, shaking her head.
Eleanor grabbed her hand, her voice firm. “Don’t go with the company you’re interviewing with now, either.”
The naive roommate laughed it off. “This company is really good. My mom had someone recommend it to me, and the salary and benefits are great.”
