Before I could answer, a commotion erupted
behind me.
A fat middle–aged man walked over, and
people rushed to greet him.
Chris saw the man and his eyes lit up. He
dropped me and burried over to him.
く
dropped me and hurried over to him.
Chris smiled and bowed.
“Mr. Johnson, so glad you could make it! It’s
an honor to have you at my son’s birthday
party.”
Barb and Mikey bowed down and boot–licked
as well.
People started whispering.
“The Callahans might be struggling, but
they’re still the Callahans.”
“Johnson from Gold Standard is here! Does
that mean they’re working with Gold
Standard?”
Г
“If so, they might be able to turn things
around. Everyone knows Gold Standard’s a
gold mine. If they can get in on that, they’re
set.”
“Johnson’s just a figurehead. He only got the
job because his uncle’s Hank. Otherwise, he’d
be nobody.”
“Still, it pays to have connections.”
Johnson was arrogant. He shook Chris’s hand
and said, “Mr. Callahan, I’m busy, so let’s get
the contract signed.”
“After that, I’ll talk to my uncle about
investing in your company. Sound good?”
Chris hesitated.
Barb urged, “No problem, let’s sign now!”
She whispered to Chris, “If we don’t take this
chance, the company’s finished!”
“The house isn’t that important anyway. Even
if we sold it, we’d only get a million, not
enough to save the company.”
“Johnson’s offering a low price, only ten
million, but if he can convince Hank to invest,
it’s all worth it.”
Mikey said, “Dad, if the company goes
bankrupt, the house is useless. I don’t want to
be poor! You promised to buy me a car and a
mansion.”
Chris nodded.
<
“Okay, if you say so.”
Johnson grinned, pulled out a contract to buy
the house, and told Chris to sign.
I frowned. “This house is family property.
Even when Mom and Dad were struggling,
they never thought about selling it!”
“Chris, they’re only offering ten million! Chris,
what are you doing? Are you crazy?”
“If the Callahans hear about this, they’re
gonna be mad.”
Chris shouted, “Danny, shut up!”
“You’re just an adopted son. Who are you to
tell me what to do?”
“The house is mine. I can do what I want with
- it. If you keep talking, I’m gonna have you
thrown out!”
Barb and Mikey glared at me, like I was
ruining their chances.
Before, they wanted me to connect them with
Gold Standard, but now that Johnson was
here, they didn’t need me anymore.
They were so practical!
Johnson glanced at me and sneered.
“You’re that adopted son, Danny?”
“You don’t run the Callahans. What right do
you have to talk?”
“Get lost! ̈ ́
I felt a little sorry for Chris.
Hank had mentioned Johnson to me, and he
didn’t like him.
If Johnson hadn’t cared for Hank’s sister,
Hank would have fired him a long time ago.
Chris quickly signed the contract, and I
frowned.
“Are you sure that you will tell Hank about
this?”
“You doing this behind his back, aren’t you
afraid of his anger?”
Johnson got angry and glared at me.
<
“Mr. Callahan, that guy’s making me
uncomfortable! Are you going to ask him to
leave?”
Chris glared at me.
“Danny, are you stupid? Do you deliberately
want to mess up our relationship with Mr.
Johnson?”
“I shouldn’t have let you come to this party!
Someone, break his legs and throw him out!”
As Chris spoke, the relatives started coming
towards me with malicious intent.
Barb and Mikey also glared at me, ready to
hurt me.
But then, a shout came from the door.
“Stop!”
Hank walked in with a group of people.
They were all big shots in business, also
people from our club.
I rolled my eyes.
It was supposed to be club night, and I told
Hank not to tell anyone about the party.
But Hank didn’t listen.
He deliberately brought them here.
They raised their eyebrows at me, grinning.
く
“Johnson, you’re borrowing my name to act
tough? You got a lot of nerve!”
