Chapter 4

“No.”
Alaric stared at me, eyes bloodshot, fingers digging into my arm.
“We’re going to marry.”
Our faces were so close that I could see the fine fuzz on his cheeks. With that begging tone, it felt like I was bullying a kid.
I blankly ruffled his hair and asked him again, “Then tell me why you want to marry me.”
His eyes darted away, but I caught his chin.
“Tell me, Alaric. Just tell me.”
I locked eyes with him and pressed further. “I’m done being the clueless idiot here.”
His lashes fluttered, then his words stumbled out. “I want you to be my wife.”
“Why?”
His tears welled up as he blinked at me, looking desperate but tongue–tied.
I said it for him, “You’re in love with me, aren’t you?
Chapter 4
“Idiot. Was that so hard to say?”

I tried to get up after patting his cheek, but he yanked me back down.
His nice–guy mask cracked as he gripped my shoulders, crying, “I’m disgusting, right?
“It must be gross. Someone like me loves you…”
I stared at him in disbelief.
What’s going on in this guy’s head?
He thinks he’s disgusting? Hates himself?
In reality, he ranked first as the most desirable man to marry in online polls!
How could someone like him be so insecure?
I finally sensed something.
I held his face, forced him to lift it, and wiped away his tears.
“When my friends heard I was marrying you, they said I must’ve hit the karma jackpot in my past eight lives. So why are you acting like it’s something to be ashamed of?”
He buried his face in my neck, not saying a word.
Chapter 4
At least the crying stopped.

I rubbed his back with a soft sigh. “Honey, when are you gonna see yourself the way I see you?”
“You own a freaking thirty–two–story office building. Everyone out there calls you ‘Boss‘ like you’re some kind of god. And let’s be real you’re hot as hell. Of course I fell for you.”
–
His body trembled against mine. “You… actually like me?” he whispered, like he couldn’t believe it.
“Why else would I show up here every day? You think I’m that bored?”
I stroked his back gently. “Girls don’t waste time on guys they’re not into. Trust me on this one.
“You’re amazing. We’re gonna be amazing. Just believe it.”
He started crying again, his tears warm against my collar. “Don’t lie to me.”
“I’m not.” My heart turned to mush as I played with his earlobe, feeling his tears on my neck and his heart pounding against
mine.
Maybe it’s because I’ve never had someone like him before. It’s… different.
In a good way.
Chapter 4
Alaric’s psyche was like glass.

One wrong word from me, one look, one attitude – boom. Total meltdown.
Not exactly CEO material, right?
But that was him, the true him.
He stood up awkwardly, face burning red while trying to keep that ice–king facade.
“Hungry?” he asked softly.
“Kinda.” I got up, fixed my wrinkled collar, tugging it down to cover my exposed waist.
Alaric whipped his head away, blushing like a teenager. But that really made my heart twist.
Seriously? This innocent?
He’s pushing thirty- no way he hasn’t… right?
I pushed that thought aside and got cozy. “Just have your assistant bring something up. I want to stay here for a while.”
“Sure.”
Watching his tall frame against the light as he left to talk to his assistant, I sized up those mile–long legs.
Chapter 4
Jesus, his proportions were unreal! Handsome, fit, rich, innocent, he had it all.
If it weren’t for his mental problem, a guy like him wouldn’t look twice at me at all.
I sighed.
