Chapter 11
Matthew looked at himself in the mirror. He was no longer young, and after his failed marriage, the woman he’d been interested in would no longer consider him for marriage.
Now, Hailey was his last chance. He had to keep her on his side if he wanted to marry above his station. How could he possibly do as she said?
When Nora saw Hailey come downstairs alone, she asked worriedly, “Why are you alone? Where’s Terence? Why did Matthew take his place?”
Hailey concealed her displeasure and said calmly. “You know Terence hasn’t been in the best health since falling into the pond, Mom. That’s why I told him to remain in the room and get some rest. Matthew’s build is similar to his, so I asked him to stand in for a bit. Look, I should go speak to the guests.”
Nora sighed in relief. “Yes, you should. Go and thank them for coming.”
Hailey nodded. She grabbed a glass of champagne and turned to mingle with the guests when an aggrieved voice rang out behind her. “Hailey!”
The noise attracted everyone’s attention, making them look upstairs. Hailey also turned around to see Matthew standing at the top of the staircase, looking down at her, his expression aggrieved.
Nora’s expression darkened. She was about to have the guards drag him away when Matthew ran downstairs and threw his arms around Hailey.
“I’m the one who married you today, Hailey. Why did you stop me from coming downstairs to greet the guests with you? Is it because you don’t love me anymore?”
His words made clear what had happened to the guests, and they started whispering among themselves.
Hailey lost her cool. She grabbed Matthew’s hand and growled, “This isn’t the right time for your tantrum, Matthew!”
