Chapter 27
“Hailey Rainer!” Nora had come upstairs with a glass of warm milk for Terence when she saw Halley forcing herself on him. She saw red and charged over to pull them apart, slapping Halley for good measure. “What the hell are you doing? Have you lost your mind?”
Terence ducked behind Nora before wiping his lips, looking disgusted. The sight of that stabbed Hailey in the heart. “I’m perfectly sanel Terence was going to be my husband again–why did you turn him into my brother?”
She looked crazed as she screamed and shouted, no longer her usual calm and composed self. “I was so close! I just needed to work a little harder for us to reconcile! Why did you have to do this to me?”
She fell to her knees and pounded her fists on the floor. Nora watched her icily and was about to say something when Terence spoke up. “I never even considered reconciling with you, Hailey.”
She burst into tears. “But you gave me a chance. I love you so much…”
“The chance was a fake one. I wanted to give you hope before letting you down–that’s the one thing you taught me over the years.” Terence chuckled. “I waited for you for five years. You always promised me you would be there, yet you would leave whenever Matthew summoned you.
“I was just giving you a taste of your own medicine. As for your claims that you loved me… I’ve never once heard you tell me that during the five years of our marriage, yet you’re going around telling everyone that now that we’re divorced.”
How pathetic could she be? She’d stomped all over his heart when he’d offered it to her, and she was now trying to get him back after he’d given up on her.
ley paled. Terence said, “You only love what you can’t have.”
humans always coveted what they didn’t and couldn’t have. It was a phenomenon that would never change.
“No, you’re wrong. I love you, Terence! I thought about it for a long time after you left, and I know how f
feel. I-”
“But I don’t love you anymore,” he cut her off. He looked into her eyes and said, “I won’t marry or love you. again–we can only be siblings from now on. I’m not joking or saying this because I’m angry.”
Hailey fell backward, her face turning as white as a sheet. Terence continued, “So, please leave me alone from now on. After all, I’m your brother, and you’re my sister. That’s all we are now.”
He turned and left. Nora sighed deeply when she saw Hailey sobbing earnestly. “You took him for granted when you had him. What’s the point of crying now that he’s gone?”
Richard was furious when he learned Hailey tried to kiss Terence in the middle of the night. He immediately decided to leave Nora and Harold in Sphere City while Hailey went to Golde City
y with him.
She wanted to retaliate, but Harold gave her a beating and made her comply. When leaving, he told her,” Don’t be pathetic
The weather was great on the day Richard left for Golde City. The sky was clear and cloudless, like Terence’s mood.
He and the rest of the Rainers saw Richard off at the airport. They bid him farewell for the last time. When
he saw Hailey’s busted lip, he sighed and approached her. “Halley.”
Her eyes were lifeless, but she still forced a smile. “Could I have a hug?”
Terence opened his arms and pulled her to him. This hug was five years too late, but at least it had arrived.
She pushed him away after a long while. Then, she stuffed something into his pocket and turned to leave without another look back.
Terence pulled the item out of his pocket to see it was a note. Only one word was written on it–farewell. They would never see each other again.
