Chapter 7
Hailey didn’t see anyone lurking outside Matthew’s place when she arrived. She headed inside to see him curled up in a comer, trembling in fear.
He threw himself into her arms when he saw her, his eyes turning red. “You’re finally here, Hailey. I was
terrified!”
She patted his back, her voice gentle and soothing. “You’re safe now. She’s gone
He wrapped his arms around her waist, looking pitiful She had to soothe him for a long time before he calmed down.
She checked the time and realized it was already past midnight. For some reason, the thought of Terence being alone at home made her feel a little anxious.
After tucking Matthew into bed, she said, “Get some rest, okay? I’m heading home to check on Terence.” Matthew grabbed her hand. “I don’t know whether she’ll be back, Hailey. Could you spend the night with me just in case?”
Hailey was initially hesitant but gave in when she looked into his eyes. She dismissed the bodyguards and stayed with Matthew.
She called Terence. When he answered, she said, “Matthew’s crazy ex–wife came to harass him again, so I’m staying here with him to be safe. I’ll be back in a few days.”
As always, he was calm and composed when answering, seemingly unfazed by her words. “There’s no need to rush. Take all the time you need with Mr. Cooke.”
На
was taken aback. She was about to say something else, but Terence had already hung up.
A week later, Hailey returned to Rainer Manor once she was sure Matthew was safe from harm. When she got out of the car, she saw Terence sunbathing in a rocking chair.
She approached him and gave him a box. “Here’s a gift for neglecting you over the past few days.”
Terence accepted it and looked at it. It was a free gift that had come with something else she’d purchased–heknew because Matthew had sent a photo of the actual gift to him yesterday. He didn’t say anything, though. He accepted it without a word and set it aside.
Hailey couldn’t help thinking that something was wrong when she saw how calm he was. However, she couldn’t pinpoint it. This odd feeling remained in her heart, so she decided to stay.
She sat beside Terence and said, “It’s our fifth wedding anniversary next weekend. How about we throw a wedding?”
He looked at her. She was talking about having a wedding to make things up to him, but her gaze was calm and indifferent. It was as if she was talking about something that didn’t matter to her.
In the past, he would’ve felt bitter over this. The bitterness would’ve condensed into a cloud of doom and gloom that forever loomed over his head.
Now, however, his heart was unaffected. He’d built walls around it, keeping wind and rain out. Nothing could get him down.
Seeing that he had no objection to her idea, Hailey hired a designer from Folysia to design their wedding outfits.

Terence couldn’t help but be reminded of the past as he looked at the outfit designs. He and Hailey had. married in a rush, so they hadn’t had time for a wedding. They’d later talked about it, but Hailey had left the country overnight upon learning that Matthew’s wife was abusing him.
After that, she’d delayed the wedding time and time again because of Matthew, so it had never happened.
Though she now suggested having a wedding, Terence couldn’t bring himself to feel happy over it. He would officially be divorced soon, so anything she did was too little, too late.
