Chapter 8
Meanwhile, Kevin remained apathetic toward Daniel’s plight. It was as though he didn’t notice the latter’s
condition.
In fact, he wanted nothing more than to beat Daniel to death.
Violet screamed once again. “Kevin, there’s only five minutes left on the timer! You should save me first!”
Only then did Kevin snap out of his haze–like trance. He rushed over and began removing the bomb.
Daniel sat up with a controller in hand. A bloodied grin could be seen on his face. “Let’s go to hell together.”
Thankfully, a police officer rushed into the warehouse and shot Daniel at that critical moment, thus killing him on the spot. A few more officers approached Violet and Kevin in order to help out with the bomb removal process.
Although the bomb was removed, the timer didn’t stop counting down at all. As soon as Violet was freed from the bomb, she bolted toward the exit right away as she was terrified of being caught in the explosion. Willian grabbed Kevin right away. “Kevin, we have to leave! The bomb will explode in three minutes!”
Most of the police officers began retreating out of the warehouse swiftly. But Kevin remained rooted to the spot while staring at the bomb, completely dumbstruck.
William gritted his teeth as he dragged Kevin forcefully out of the warehouse. The next thing everyone knew, the bomb went off.
True to Daniel’s words, the destructive power of the bomb was insane. The entire warehouse was instantly obliterated.
William shielded Kevin at the very last moment, so he ended up absorbing the remnants of the explosive power and got hurt. He was sent to the hospital right away.
Kevin clambered up to his feet, clearly unhurt.
Violet rushed over to hug him right away. “Kevin, I already knew how you felt about me when we were still inside the warehouse! Back then, I vowed to myself that I’d marry you as long as I survived the ordeal!”
The truth was finally revealed. The murderer who killed me was dead too.
I thought I’d be free from Kevin now, but I was dismayed to find out that I was still hanging around him. I couldn’t even get away from him.
That realization made me break down on the spot. Why must God be so unfair to me? Why couldn’t I regain my freedom at this time?
After the case was solved, Kevin and William were awarded third–class merits.
Violet couldn’t wait to introduce Kevin to her parents. She kept recounting the tale of how Kevin had saved her life and insisted on getting married to him.
However, Kevin just remained silent. He spaced out the whole time too.
After the case was closed, my parents went to the police station to claim my body. Kevin had been

watching them from the shadows, so I could see them too.
I saw my mom’s shoulders tremble slightly as she wept for me. On the other hand, my dad put up a strong front. He just comforted my mom the whole time.
My funeral was held one month later. Kevin chose to show up at my funeral in a black suit. He just stood in the last row of the venue.
When my mom noticed him, she approached him with red–rimmed eyes. Then, she pointed at him angrily.
“I want you to leave! Get lost right now! I don’t want to see you at my daughter’s funeral! Just get lost!”
Kevin lowered his head. “Mr. and Mrs. Fairfield, I-
Before he could finish his sentence, my mom couldn’t take it anymore. She slapped Kevin across the face immediately.
Kevin didn’t say anything after that. He just let my mom slap him..
My dad quickly grabbed hold of my emotional mom. Then, he turned to look at Kevin.
“Kevin, you received a third–class merit. You’re now a hero among the citizens. But you traded in my daughter’s life for the glory.
“I want you to leave right now. I’m sure my daughter doesn’t want to see you either. After all, you’re the culprit who killed her.”
Kevin finally regained his senses the moment he heard my dad’s words. A tear rolled down his cheek at that moment.
Then, he sank down to his knees while crying his heart out. It was as though the numbness that had plagued him for quite some time had finally shattered because of my dad’s words.
“Mr. and Mrs. Fairfield, I’m sorry! I love Michelle with all my heart! I really hope that she can come back to me! I’m willing to exchange my life for hers!
“What’s the use of having a third–class merit? I just want Michelle to be back!”
