Chapter 7
Peter pulled me into his arms and shot Val a mocking glare.
“Damn, dude! Of all the things you could be, you really chose to be a woman’s other guy?”
“Don’t you know she’s my fiancée? We’re about to get our marriage license any day now!”
Val’s a part–time fitness coach, so he didn’t even flinch. Peter’s weak punches didn’t stand a chance against him.
Before Val could even get a word out, I turned and stood protectively in front of him, snapping back.
“Hey! Val’s my boyfriend. You’re the one parading around with a woman and a kid!

How about you don’t drag your mess over here and stop embarrassing yourself?”
“You‘ re just my ungrateful ex, Peter. You’re the one who cheated on me, and now you’ve got the nerve to call my boyfriend the other guy? Wow.”
I held onto Val’s hand, fingers laced tight.
Peter’s face went pale, and he glared at me hard. “Hailey, you…”
Just then, a pregnant woman walked up behind him.
Josie put on her usual innocent act, her voice all sad and pathetic.
“Hailey… Listen, Peter was just being nice, looking out for me since I’m a poor, lonely pregnant woman. Girl, you got all jealous over that?”

“I’ve told you we have nothing going on. But, hey, if it really bothered you so much, why didn’t you just tell me? I’d have stayed away, you know. But here you are, canceling the wedding and running off to hook up with another guy?! You’re making your fiancé the bad guy here, you know?”
I glanced at the group of tourists behind her and couldn’t hold back a laugh.
“Girl, you’re about to pop, but here you are out and about stirring shit up. Watch it, or karma’s gonna come for that baby.”
I swear, seeing them again just made me sick. God, I wanted nothing more to do with either
of these liars!
So I pulled Val and turned to leave. But suddenly, Peter grabbed my wrist.

“Babe, come on!”
He actually sounded a little desperate.
“I know you’re still mad at me. Is it because I got too close to Josie?”
“But I told you, the baby’s not mine!”
“Listen, as soon as she gives birth, I’m sending her abroad. After that, no one will bother us anymore.”
“Hailey, please… come back with me…‘
I couldn’t take it anymore. With all the strength I had, I yanked my hand away.
“Mr. Iverson, whatever you’ve got going on with that woman has nothing–nothing–to do with me anymore.”
“Quit fooling yourself and stop messing with me and my boyfriend’s lives!”

Peter didn’t know, but Josie had already found me on their first day in Santa Fe.
She’d come over smiling like she’d won, practically gloating.
“Hey, I just wanna thank you. Thanks for stepping aside and giving me back my baby’s dad.”
She told me the baby wasn’t her husband’s at all.
It happened when she and Peter had one too many drinks and, well, one thing led to another.
And, of course, Peter didn’t know.
The bitch was saving it as a “surprise.” Turns out, back then, Peter had always chased after Josie.

But she dumped him when he was broke, thinking he was beneath her. Now that he’s got money, she’s all over him again, trying to snag that “Mrs. Iverson” title.
I couldn’t help but laugh in disgust.
“Gosh, girl, have some self–respect. Don’t be so cheap like this. Seriously, you’re making us all women look bad.”
That whole mess that day left me feeling so sick.
Ever since I got to Santa Fe, I’ve just been thankful I had the sense to leave back then.
No way would I ever want to be tied up in this shit!
